Fairness in AI
Bias in AI systems refers to the systematic errors or prejudices that can lead to unfair, discriminatory, or inaccurate outcomes. These biases can come from different sources, like the data used to train the AI models, the algorithms themselves, and the decisions made by the AI developers.
Bias in AI comes from our own flaws as a civilization. The historical data we give AI models access to is filled with unaddressed injustices, biases, and prejudices. AI models “learn” these behaviors and become biased.
AI developers apply AI algorithms without considering ethics, resulting in unintended consequences, often for people of color. However, solutions to these problems are often more complex. Let’s look at some cases where this has happened and continues to happen.
Sources of Bias in AI
If the data used to train an AI model doesn’t represent the entire population or contains historical biases, the model may learn and continue these biases. For example, a facial recognition system trained primarily on images of light-skinned individuals may perform poorly on darker-skinned individuals. This was seen with some early facial recognition software, which had higher error rates for people of color.
Another example we have seen when generating images or videos is AI’s portrayal of African faces.
When we specify that we want an African character, they are often portrayed as dirty, malnourished, and in impoverished conditions, while Caucasians are generally shown as attractive and in privileged circumstances.
The choice of algorithms and their settings can introduce biases into the AI system. For instance, COMPAS, an algorithm used in the US criminal justice system to assess the likelihood of a defendant reoffending, was found to be biased against African Americans, predicting higher risks of relapse into crime for them compared to white defendants.
Societal Impacts of Biased AI
Biased AI can lead to unfair treatment and discrimination against people based on characteristics like race, gender, age, or socioeconomic status. For example, Amazon’s AI recruitment tool was scrapped after it was found to be biased against women, downgrading resumes that included the word “women’s” or that had women’s colleges listed.
AI systems that show biases can reinforce and continue harmful stereotypes and prejudices in society. An instance of this is seen in Google’s image recognition algorithm, which showed how AI can perpetuate offensive stereotypes.

Biased AI can worsen existing inequalities and create barriers to equal opportunities and access to resources. For instance, studies have shown that AI-driven credit scoring systems may unfairly disadvantage minority groups, making it harder for them to get loans or credit approvals.
