A fairer chance for dual diagnosis?

A fairer chance for dual diagnosis?

'Stigma surrounding mental health and the use of substances is a persistent and pervasive issue, particularly for people with a dual diagnosis,' write Edward Loveless, James Streatfiend and Dr Stephen Donaldson of Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) in our latest issue. They make the case for the important role assistant psychologists can play in understanding, addressing and mitigating stigma and offer their strategies for supporting people with a dual diagnosis, for whom the 'stigma of blame and shame is often twofold'. Their person-centred approach means going beyond the diagnosis to understand more about them and create a safe and supportive environment by collaborating with others in the therapeutic community – an approach that takes effort to set up and establish, but which reaps dividends.
