Failure, Shame and Now… Resilience
What happens when you get fired from a job that you found fulfilling, you resign from a role that did not match your interest and then you are sent home on mutual understanding with your employer due to COVID 19 pandemic all under 5 years. Career development Coach Eunice Victoria continues to share on failure, shame and introduces resilience.
“I thank readers for giving me feedback on my recent article on failure and shame. Today I introduce another word called resilience. In 2015 I got a role in a multinational organization as a Communications assistant that I loved. I enjoyed developing impactful strategies and organizing events. Working with the media was my best part in this. Seeing my work take shape on digital platforms was breathtaking. By 2016 I was sent home (Fired, lol) which I found unfair at that time.
I applied for another opportunity which I got within 3 weeks. This one was a permanent role and my salary had been doubled. I worked there for two years but found the role not aligned to my passion and goal in life and I found the environment toxic and had affected my mental health. I decided to resign.
I worked very hard, on myself, aligned my goals with my vision and purpose and this time, I knew which role and organizations I wanted to work with. I made my application and got the role. The organization I worked for this time made me use my skill set, experience, education and passion to the brim. I enjoyed working on every project that I was assigned. This time, COVID 19 pandemic separated me from my job. I still had the skills though, the passion and willingness to serve in my profession.
?I continued working as a communication consultant which I still do to date. ?I applied for an opportunity and managed to get an interview. In that interview I knew that I was victorious and nothing could tell me otherwise. I needed to serve.
I used that experience, my skills and passion to develop Skills to Grow Africa, a career development organization whose aim is to mentor, empower, motivate and inspire African millennials to achieve their full potential through my story so that together we can create a world where everyone has influence.

When I look back at decisions I had made regarding my career, the opportunities that I thought I had lost, I am grateful because it taught me resilience.
?I learnt to go for what aligns with my vision and purpose in life other than just paying bills. I learnt that once one door closes, it is an opportunity for you to open another one with bigger opportunities. However, I learnt that to do this, you must be self-aware. ?sit down with yourself, I know people who were offended that I said failure is actually a good thing in my last article, but honestly it is. You have to check what happened, design the opportunities that you want and keep trying, keep applying. However, you have to be very strategic about things this time.
I now work with people with stories, people who are strategic about their careers, I work with people who want to start opportunities to serve others like I did. I work with everyone because I know that everyone has influence and everyone can grow. Resilience is the word. Failure is not a bad thing after all. Failure will teach you, redirect you and nurture you into a resilient human being. In 2022 everyone wants to work with a resilient person. Let’s ?work together.”
