A Failure of Leadership
Frequently, when considering failed leadership — whether in business, entertainment or politics — we pin the blame on toxic masculinity. Culprits ranging from Harvey Weinstein to Donald Trump are pegged as narcissistic, manipulative and, ultimately, amoral. These traits are representative of everything we do not want in the men (and women) who are making decisions that will affect our lives.
As New York has become the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, Mayor de Blasio has become emblematic of a different type of dysfunctional governance. Although no one can deny that he is genuinely committed to helping the poor and marginalized, the mayor has made New Yorkers pay the price for his grandiose vision of himself as a moral leader.
