Failure Can Bring Success

Failure Can Bring Success

Yesterday I attended my 17-year-old nephew's Dart Tournament. Scoring second place wasn't his ideal goal. At the end of the game, we reflected on his performance, what went well and not so good moments he had. Walking out to the carpark I said to him, ' You learn more from mistakes than you do from success so don't be afraid to dream or fail.'

Having that Quality concept of thinking my approach to him was similar to a Plan-Do-Check-Act model which can be used to learn from experience, in a systematic manner, and develop plans to continuously improve. By celebrating failures as an opportunity to learn, we can use failures as a base point for future.

If we, as leaders, reward failure as a means to recognize ideas and springboard learning, we can take away the stigma and fear of failing. Many people around the world are taught to avoid failure, that failure is bad, failure kills, and failure will ruin your life. However, in today's rapidly changing world failure is perhaps one of the greatest competitive advantages that organizations can have. In fact, many have gone so far as to reward failure.

This can be diversity and innovation at its best -- all realized through failure. By learning from our failures, we can tap a breathtaking amount of innovation, teamwork, and ultimate ROI.
