?? Failing Forward ??

Have you ever experienced a moment where things just didn't go as planned, leaving you feeling disheartened? I know I have. There were nights I'd take these “failures” to bed, endlessly pondering what I should have done differently. The next day, I'd wake up tired, my energy levels sapped, directly affecting my productivity and potential success at work.

Growing up, many of us in the Western world or at least in Germany were taught to view failure negatively. Nowadays especially children are often shielded from it. But here's a perspective shift: What if we start celebrating failure as a stepping stone towards success, a concept known as "Failing Forward"?

?As a former entrepreneur and manager now in a large organization, I've learned that failure is an essential part of the learning process, leading to growth and achievement when approached constructively. This mindset isn't just crucial for startups; it's equally relevant for personal career development and within established organizations. A Harvard Business Review study (https://hbr.org/2017/01/are-you-solving-the-right-problems ) highlighted that 85% of executives believe their companies struggle with problem diagnosis, leading to substantial costs and missed opportunities for growth and innovation.

By fostering a culture that embraces 'Failing Forward', we can positively impact companies and, more importantly, our team members. Here's how:

??Setting Realistic Goals: Recognizing that success is a journey helps in creating attainable goals, understanding that some failures might occur along the way.

?Learning from Mistakes: Viewing failures as learning opportunities allows us to analyze what went wrong and how to improve next time.

??Innovation and Risk-Taking: Seeing failure as integral to innovation encourages us to take calculated risks, understanding that groundbreaking ideas often stem from several attempts.

???Celebrating Small Wins: Acknowledging even minor achievements boosts morale and motivation, especially when facing challenges.

??Feedback and Reflection: Constructive feedback is invaluable for gaining different perspectives and identifying areas for improvement.

? Adaptability: Adjusting strategies in response to failures means faster learning and improvement for the company.

??Persistence: Continuously striving towards goals, despite setbacks, is crucial for long-term success.

Implementing these aspects brings about remarkable changes:

→ Growth Mindset: Viewing failure as an opportunity to grow rather than a reflection of one's abilities.

→ Overcoming Fear of Failure: Normalizing failure diminishes its fear, encouraging ambitious pursuits.

→ Resilience: Bouncing back from failures with sustained motivation and a positive outlook.

This approach not only helps individuals and teams but also provides companies with clearer insights into their real challenges and the best strategy and tactics to tackle them. Let's embrace 'Failing Forward' and see where this journey takes us!

Dr. Nicole Wieberneit, Absolutely! The concept of 'Failing Forward' resonates deeply with me, both in my professional journey and in the advice I share with my clients in the manufacturing sector, as well as the aspiring STEM female leaders I coach. Your mention of transforming setbacks into stepping stones for growth and innovation captures the essence of what I believe is essential for any business or individual looking to excel in today's competitive environment. Each failure sucks and stings, no doubt, but failure should be a step forward, not backward.
