FAFSA Fiasco

FAFSA Fiasco

By most accounts, this year's rollout of the FAFSA has been nothing short of a disaster. We put out a call for possible solutions and heard an array of views from counselors, admissions officers, and others. Here are their perspectives:

OPINION: The glitchy FAFSA is only one problem with getting into college. Here’s how to make the process less confusing

We need greater communication between school counselors and admissions officers, better data to help admissions officers make fairer decisions, standardized recommendation letters, and more

OPINION: We fear our students will be shut out of college due to FAFSA failures

Deadlines must be delayed to protect disadvantaged students

OPINION: There’s a temporary fix to the FAFSA mess — all colleges must extend decision deadlines

Students who need financial aid can’t possibly pick schools without full information on costs

OPINION: FAFSA is in deep trouble; all stakeholders must take steps to fix it right away

We must establish a new contract that reaffirms the government’s duty to help students obtain funds so they can access postsecondary education

OPINION: With financial aid processes more broken than ever, here’s what families can do

Talking about money is hard, but it’s a critical first step for college-going families

OPINION: School counselors can’t undo the FAFSA mess on their own. We need a national movement right now

All hands-on-deck needed for workshops and signing events to get students back in the higher education pipeline
