FAFSA Fiasco
The Hechinger Report
Covering inequality and innovation in education with in-depth, independent journalism since 2010.
By most accounts, this year's rollout of the FAFSA has been nothing short of a disaster. We put out a call for possible solutions and heard an array of views from counselors, admissions officers, and others. Here are their perspectives:
We need greater communication between school counselors and admissions officers, better data to help admissions officers make fairer decisions, standardized recommendation letters, and more
Deadlines must be delayed to protect disadvantaged students
Students who need financial aid can’t possibly pick schools without full information on costs
We must establish a new contract that reaffirms the government’s duty to help students obtain funds so they can access postsecondary education
Talking about money is hard, but it’s a critical first step for college-going families
All hands-on-deck needed for workshops and signing events to get students back in the higher education pipeline
