3 Reasons Why Marketing a Small Business is Hard

If you are the owner of a small business, marketing it can be difficult, especially if you are an expert in what you do but dislike - even fear - marketing and selling (especially YOURSELF!)

Here are three out of a myriad of reasons why marketing a small business can be hard...and what to do about it...

1 You’ve too much information

No matter what business you’re in, there’s an overwhelming amount of information and courses out there trying to teach you how to market your business. And whilst it’s always important to keep learning, it can be easy to get caught up in all of it. And not all of it is REALLY what YOU need fixing...

I often hear business owners and entrepreneurs say they are struggling with getting leads.

Though it might be because they don’t have enough experience with marketing, much of the time it is because they are getting distracted by the shiny objects offered to them by slick sales funnels using NLP to capture you in a freeby which soon becomes an 'opportunity' to join them in a high 3 or 4 figure 'solution'.

2 You don’t have time

If you’re running your own business, you already know that time is an incredibly precious commodity.

Between marketing and servicing clients, keeping up with social media and staying on top of industry trends, it’s tough to find enough hours in the day to sleep and eat - never mind get real about what you and your business REALLY need - to work ON your business and not just IN it.

3 You don’t know where to start

Deciding what you want to say, where to say it, and how, can be intimidating for small business owners. Especially if they literally have no plan of action, no idea of what your audience want to hear from you and indeed who they actually are!

If you’re trying to market your business, but don’t know where to start, take some time to think about who your audience is. Here are 3 top tips to help you...

  1. Think about them: what help do they need right now that you can offer?
  2. How can you reach them?
  3. How will they keep in touch?

Each marketing touchpoint with you must reflect YOU, the people you want to serve, how you will really help them and what transformation they ACTUALLY get when they work with you - not a list of 'over promise, under deliver' stuff they never will receive, but it sounds good to say it...one way street to losing clients who tell other people how shady you (or your service or your communication at the very least) are...

Can Small Business Marketing Coaching Help?

So I don't do this here very often - but my values are wisdom, intuition and pragmatism (W.I.P!!) which I bring to my coaching world, so that means me sharing a bit of WIP with you: so that is why I want to explain.

As a small business owner, if you're really struggling with getting in front of the RIGHT PEOPLE FOR YOU, then marketing coaching can help you discover your unique strengths, your aligned audience and wade through options to find the targeted ways to focus your marketing to fit.

You’ll also learn how to reach your audience effectively, so you can nurture a community around your business - this doesn't mean set up a group! We work together on simple strategies and plans which are proven, but are customised to you and what you need.

Not a big 6, 8 or 10 part system or framework to tack on as extra to what you do - that just gives you more to do.

Most importantly, small business marketing coaching will make sure that all of your resources are working towards one goal which you'd love to achieve if only you could get success in your business.

A coach will help you with mindset, habits and accountability - but a marketing coach gets you over the threshold of meaningful marketing and sales action that business or life coaches simply cannot.

When Do I Start?

(LOL! I don't mean to 'NLP' you into signing up with me! It is more about do it now, don't delay..).

Many people ask when they should begin to hire a small business marketing coach.

The truth is that you don’t want to wait until you are struggling before seeking coaching help. This can cost you both money and valuable time that could have been used more productively with an expert at your side from day one.

Just like a tree, to sustain and grow your business for the future, plant the seed right now.

Most business owners consult marketing coaches for three main reasons

  1. To strategise around growing their business.
  2. To work through issues as they arise
  3. To keep them on track

If any of these sound like something you would relish and desire right now, then it is time for us to talk - why not book a quick call to tell me more?
