Faff Free Friday Issue #17 - The Learn by Starting Issue

It is easier to learn by starting something than to start something by learning

So many overwhelmed solo professional service providers struggle with making consistent sales in their business.

Especially when all their time, energy and money is taken up with Personal Development which is not translating into action.

Though sweet smelling and attractive to start off with - like a Venus Fly Trap is to small insects - that expensive cure-all course or 365 daily ready made social posts download, might just turn out to be cause a problem - not solve one.

The course never gets started (never mind implemented) and the off the peg posts are more 'so-so' than social and not going to help anyone build a profitable business.

I am guilty of falling into that 'Venus Fly Trap' of the entrepreneurial world.

Have you done that too?

Buying a 'thing' you did not need/start/use...

Fixing problems you didn't have...

  1. Signed up for a quick fix?
  2. Started out looking for 'improvements' to your marketing because you just think you 'should' be doing the same as everyone else seems to be doing?
  3. Taking every freebie webinar, challenge or course - right through to buying into high cost single issue coaching which is really group based training and ends up with a lot of online course work for you to do, on your own?
  4. Not ACTUALLY moving your 'learning' mode into your 'doing' mode?
  5. Finding that ZERO action gets ZERO results?

Whilst not exactly numbers, I have an equation for you:

No action = no leads = no sales

Or put another way (because us coaches like to flip things...):

Done, imperfect

Is better than

Not done, perfect

Rather than finding out what you, your business, your audience and your service TRULY require to bring profitable clients to your door consistently, it's a little 'safer' isn't it to procrasti-learn...

Why not give your service a chance first?

Trying out a service in the real world can test what works and what doesn't. You can launch it, learn from the launch and do it all again.

Launch. Learn. Launch (Again)

That's it.

No fixes required.

And if there are, you will find out what gaps (if any) there are along the way.

And before you start you really don't have to make everything perfect, with every possible issue sorted before it happened even if there wasn't likely to be any issue anyhow!

I give you permission to start, no need to wait...

No need to wait until you can afford that guru's very expensive course/Mastermind because without it, "how can you possibly be able to use your own valuable knowledge to get clients?"

Your choice, but there is another way and my 30+ years of working with others in training, coaching and mentoring roles proves that the answer usually is within YOU not someone else's system.

How does that work then?

This is what I have used in my own business from Day One - and I know countless others have too. Because I have worked with them, read about them, and even the Gurus, when you dig a little deeper actually did this...

  1. Have an idea for a service. Preferably based on your expertise - and a will to make it work for your audience and for you.
  2. Do a little research with some typical clients who might enjoy being asked about what they need to solve that you might just have a solution for (and without expectation, might you find that they had not considered themselves as a potential client until you ask them what they need, and then you both understand how you could work together - without a sniff of a sleazy sales spiel from you?)
  3. Run it as a paid beta/trial/test service with a few collaborators who can pioneer it for you. Note the PAID word here.
  4. Earn whilst you learn - use simple measurements and feedback loops to improve the service for the next run.

How to break free of the Personal Development Fly Trap

The world wants you in the thick of it, sharing your solutions.

With everything that is going on, it is not the time to hide behind, "I'm busy with x, y and z course." Or, "I am not ready because of a, b or c."

It is time to get out there and help people with your expert knowledge and talents.

CAVEAT: If your learning is getting you the qualification you must have to work in your sector, that is different e.g. Corgi Gas Fitter, Doctor...get that learning done.

Apart from the legals or qualifications you need to do your job, what learning are you doing now which you are finding difficult to put into action?

What can you offer RIGHT NOW to solve a problem your absolute perfect type of client is really needing solving (RIGHT NOW, not next week or month...)?

If you're stuck in that fly trap it's hard for you to reach out to them and help them, when you probably need help to break free too.

This might give you a bit of support.

Know that it is safe.

You are safe.

It is safe for you to lift your heels from that sticky trap, to lean in, to help your clients AND learn something - simply from STARTING that service you have put off for SO long.

Trying out, testing, doing with a simple 1-page do-able marketing action plan.

To get your service out there and done.

Noticed.

Making sales.
