There are two terms interchangeably used in the glittering world of marketing. One is fad and the other is fashion. If you see fad it is quite to the point though. The effect of fad is temporary in nature. The fads come in no time gains importance washes away all the fashion acquire market share enjoys the popularity for the shorter period of time and vanishes from the market and the people's mind.
Fashion on the other hand is a style or a trend that is popular for a longer period of time and is influenced by cultural, social and economic factors.
Why Fad is important in the eyes of Marketers
If you see the bandwagon effect where people are blindly following social media influencers and buying the products or services they are promoting without even knowing the usage of that particular product or service.
Fads often have a limited lifespan and they can quickly lose their sheen. This is because they are usually based on a single idea or novelty factor that quickly becomes over used and overtly exposed. Once the novelty got its wear and tear the fad fades away. But there is a quick opportunity for a short term gains attached to it in the eyes of marketers.

Fashion is an enduring trend and influenced widely by socio-cultural political legal and economic factors. It is not about cloths and accessories, it encompasses a wide range of styles, trends and attitudes mostly inevitable in shaping our society at large.

For Example: Flared dresses were worn by royalties and most English women during 60's and the gowns the drapes are again in fashion. The flared pants usually worn as a fashion statement in 80"s and again are in fashion in real time. so do the hair cuts and hair styles the belts wallets and endless list how fashion is affecting our persona.

The Negative sides of Fad and Fashion
Mostly fads create a peer pressure which can lead to exclusion and bullying. Fad can be expensive and general masses feel pressure while adhering to them.
As far as, fashion is concerned its been criticised for promoting unrealistic beauty standards. Fashion can also be exclusionary and reinforce social inequalities. High end fashion brands are only accessible to a wealthy elite.
But there is catch for a marketer here mostly people are using second copies of out of the reach products and services and producers are making huge profits.
