Faculty Responsibility and Evaluation

The professional responsibilities of a faculty are teaching, scholarly activity and service. All are important, but for any undergraduate institution, the heaviest emphasis is on teaching. These responsibilities vary throughout the career span of a faculty. Faculty must carry out these responsibilities in a professional and ethical manner that enhances the purposes of education.

Undergraduate institutions require excellence in teaching as its first priority. It should be understood that several hours of preparation is needed for every hour in the classroom. Faculty are also expected to keep abreast of the latest development of their respective field. The proactive attitude in supporting students in their ongoing projects, and evaluate their completed work is also necessary.

Scholarly activity is the process of research and active participation in interdisciplinary work. It takes the form of original research and sharing knowledge with peers in the profession. This involves attending and presenting at professional conferences; writing books, articles, and book reviews; and preparing performances and exhibitions. The service is the use of expertise and sharing the responsibilities in the governance of the departments, institutions, and communities.

The evaluation of the faculty has always been a topic of discussion and most of the solution devised are based on the result and the students feedback. Both these parameters have their well established shortcomings. The research and the services can be more of less qualified. The evaluation of teaching aspect should be correlated with all the activities a faculty is to perform from the day he is assigned the responsibility of teaching a particular subject. Ideally, a faculty should perform the many task in a semester, some of them are shown in the Figure 1.

These activities are difficult to monitor and evaluate manually but at the same time these can be arrested in a time frame. An efficient online system can very easily monitor all the activities of all the faculty and tell us bottleneck in the teaching process. A table shown below illustrate how we can set dates of different tasks and assign some points to each activity to calculate score. The delay and changes/modification in the task add negative score.

These calculations may look slightly complicated but we need not to worry, as any efficient online monitoring system will take care of it. We can set-up our own point system to suit system. It will identify the meticulous and efficient faculty of the institute. We can set the time line for all other activities and evaluate the APS. The important part of the proposed system is that it would record the changes made during the semester may be in lesson plan, marks, attendance etc.

ACADPLUS is the ONLY product, which include such a systematic and flexible system of online monitoring.
