Faculty funding, Daily Iowan buys two papers, case studies from CA, NY and OK

Iowa City:?I just spent two days at the University of Iowa with other faculty from ten states diving into the details of the purchase of two community papers by the Daily Iowan and ideas to integrate community reporting into UI’s journalism curriculum. This is a striking example of how a journalism school and student media can work together, expanding student opportunities and increasing local news coverage.?See?my trip notes here?and our?CCN case study here. (Attendees pictured above).?

This summer the Iowa faculty and staff are planning their next steps. For us at CCN, as we approach our two-year mark, we are also thinking about our next steps to seed and grow more university-led student reporting. But one thing we know -- innovative faculty are at the core of each program. To recognize their hard work, we are?launching our second round of Faculty Champion funding. Applications due June 15.?

Below you will also read about programs at the CUNY Newmark School, Biola University, the University of Colorado and the University of Oklahoma. Many more case studies?are on our website. Also, please join us for some upcoming events, including a CCN/AEJMC?webinar on May 28th at 1PM EST?and our?Powering Local News conference August 7.

Do great work and be in touch!

NEW YORK CITY:?Jere Hester doesn’t think of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY as a school — he calls it a “training ground.”

“From day one, you're working as a journalist — with all the responsibility that that entails,” he said. “This has never been about an academic exercise.”

CALIFORNIA:?“The interest is in trying to give students a voice they didn’t have before,” said Michael Longinow, chair of Biola’s Department of Digital Journalism and Media. “There’s diminishing interest among students to pick up the traditional newspaper. We want to give students new ways to find out about the things impacting their campus and their world.”

The Future of University-Led Reporting Programs

What is the future of university-led reporting programs? How can they continue making a difference in the local news crisis? As The Center for Community News celebrates two years, we bring together a panel of leaders to discuss recent research and future directions for these programs. Richard Watts and Meg Little Reilly from CCN will present ideas for the future and summarize results from a survey of 100 faculty program leaders. CCN is co-hosting this webinar with AEJMC. We look forward to seeing you there!
