"Facts Tell, Stories Sell"?...

"Facts Tell, Stories Sell"...

Facts Tell, Stories Sell.

"Ahh, not this phrase again..." ??

Almost all of us have heard that trite saying before.

Heck, I use it on my coaching calls every week. ??

But.

Have you ever stopped and actually thought about it? ??

Stop and think for a second...

"Why is it that stories work better than just spouting a bunch of facts and figures?"

Don't worry, I'm about to give you the answer so we can save that precious brainpower. ??

See, our brains are literally wired for storytelling.

No joke.

Caution, I’m about to get a little technical here...just keep up with me.

The way our brains receive information is AMAZING. ??

Every single day, we read, hear, or listen to hundreds of thousands of words online. ??

All that can get us pretty jumbled up top in our head. ??

I’ll be the first to say that I feel fried after spending hours at work.

How many times have you tried to watch someone’s in-depth course videos only to glaze over and daydream? ??

It’s not because the content wasn’t valuable….it’s because we are wired to lose focus over stats, figures, and data.

The way around that is…

?? Connection Through Stories. ??

We must first understand that stories get us in sync with one another.

It’s in our primal nature - since the dawn of time.

It’s called “Neural Coupling” and it’s a pretty cool thing. ?

When you hear, see, or read a story, your brain activates in certain parts to allow you to turn the story into your own ideas, experiences, and dreams.

Have you ever felt this way watching a movie?

“Heck yeah, I can be that awesome hero!”

So when we experience Neural Coupling, our brains will mirror the brain patterns to that of the speaker/presenter/attractive character.

That’s pretty dang cool, I’d say.

Now we all know what it feels like to watch a great movie, read a good book, or listen to an amazing speaker.

That feeling we get is pleasure…and it’s all thanks to our good friend, Dopamine. ??

Once we experience the story and start to get involved, our brains dump dopamine into the mix. ??

This allows us to remember the story with more clarity since we associate the story with the pleasure chemical.

Now, I’m almost done…

There’s just one last thing to hit on.

After we start to experience Neural Coupling and we get all wined-and-dined by dopamine, then our behavior is affected.

A well-presented story triggers the motor, sensory, and frontal cortices to make us just a little bit more vulnerable to whatever happens next.

This is the part where you, as a marketer, can swoop in and present that irresistible offer. ??

To recap:

1. A good story is told.

2. We connect with the story.

3. We experience neural coupling to mirror the attractive character.

4. Dopamine is released to make us feel good, connected, loved, powerful, etc.

5. Our behavior is affected slightly.

6. We connect with the story even more and want to share it.

It’s in our brain chemistry to CRAVE a good story and then share it. ??

And this is why facts and figures tell, but ultimately...stories sell. ??

*mic drop* ??
