Factors to Consider Before Exploring a Move

The legal job market is as dynamic as it is competitive. For legal professionals, knowing the right time to consider a career move can be the key to unlocking new opportunities and achieving professional growth. Unfortunately, many attorneys exploring a move blunder by failing to (1) conduct a wholistic review of their career and (2) optimize the timing of their move. Fortunately for you, the team at Key Choice Recruiting is here to advise on your transition, ensuring your next career move is both strategic and fulfilling.

To time your move optimally, consider doing the following:

(1) Conduct a Personal Career Assessment

  • Are you still passionate about your current role?
  • Are you getting proper reps for your growth?
  • What do those reps signal? Are you doing the same work with established clients, or are you always doing one-off client work? This is especially important to understand for those looking to make partner.
  • Have you had a negative review lately? Was it justified?
  • Do you have sufficient work flow to earn your bonus?
  • How is your work-life balance? Have you experienced an unsustainable pace?
  • Do you need a reset with a new firm? Why?
  • Does work get in between you and. your personal life frequently?

As you give these questions thought, consider discussing with us during our 1:1 intake as well.

(2) Understand the legal job market cycle and how it correlates with bonus payouts

Firms pay out bonuses at different times, and high applicant activity periods often occur right after each bonus payout or coincide with fiscal year-ends, while slower periods may occur during holidays or summer months. Understanding this cycle is crucial. It allows you to anticipate hiring trends and plan your career moves accordingly, ensuring you're not just riding the wave, but steering your career ship expertly. Get ahead of the curve by timing your discussion with us well in advance of your bonus payout date.

(3) Understand legal job market trends and economic conditions.

Staying informed about the legal job market and economic trends is imperative. During different economic cycles, many firms have been incorrect in forecasting their own needs. Recall the pandemic, many firms refrained from hiring M&A lawyers initially. This caused a yo-yo effect, and well-prepared candidates who had their materials prepped by us in advance were able to benefit from lateral moves in 2021, where signing bonuses were highest.

Additionally, some practice areas are better than others for opportunistic hiring, and this varies by economic forecasts. Moving as a corporate associate in 2021 is a different process when compared to 2024.

(4) Let us be your team of trusted advisors.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to when you should consider a job change in the legal field. However, by understanding market cycles, assessing personal career satisfaction, staying informed on trends, and preparing adequately, we can make an informed decision about when to make your next move.

Super helpful. I especially like the point about taking stock of what sort of work you’re doing - one off assignments versus established client work. That’s definitely something I think a lot of younger attorneys tend to overlook but so important in terms of career advancement.?
