Facing Reality: Will Blockchain Ever Conquer Pharma?

Facing Reality: Will Blockchain Ever Conquer Pharma?

Non-Fungible Thoughts

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology and healthcare, the journey of blockchain in the pharmaceutical industry offers a compelling study of expectations versus reality. When blockchain technology first entered the scene, it was heralded as a revolutionary force poised to transform the industry. Promises of more transparent clinical trials, reliable supply chains, and empowered patients painted a future that was not just improved but transformed.

Yet, the widespread adoption that was anticipated has notably faltered. Why has this promising technology struggled to find its footing where it seemingly mattered most?

Recognizing the importance of understanding these challenges and learning from them, Into the Metahealth has partnered with 诺和诺德 and the Nordic Blockchain Association to host an exclusive conference in Copenhagen, on June 18th. Industry leaders will share insights and hard-earned lessons about the gaps between blockchain's theoretical promise and its practical application.

What's missing, as our upcoming conference will explore, isn't just about advancing the technology but aligning it with the real-world dynamics of the pharmaceutical industry. The discussions will look into how blockchain can be adapted to meet the stringent requirements of pharma, the necessity of cross-sector cooperation, and the critical need for frameworks that accommodate new technologies within existing regulations.

?? I'm curious, why do you think blockchain has failed in achieving widespread adoption within the healthcare industry?

?? If you are in Copenhagen and wish to attend the conference, comment below or DM me.

Under the Microscope

Dr Jean-Emmanuel Bibault and Dr David JH W. have recently announced the launch or their startup jaide, a French-American startup aiming to redefine the physician-patient experience using generative artificial intelligence. Here is a demo of their solution ??

Scrolling through their posts, I found another gem: The Medicine & Machine Learning (MaML) Podcast ?? This podcast is produced by medical and graduate students passionate about the emerging intersection of healthcare and artificial intelligence. It features interviews with prominent figures from industry, academia, and medicine, catering to listeners new to the field.

Web3 Deciphered

Multiparty computation ???

What is it ? Multiparty computation, or MPC, is a special way to help people or computers work together on a problem without sharing their private information with each other. Here's a breakdown of how it works in simple terms:

I don't get it... Give me an example! Imagine you and your friends each have a piece of a secret recipe ??. None of you want to reveal your part of the recipe, but you all want to know if combining your ingredients will result in a delicious cake ??. MPC is a method that lets everyone combine their ingredients, without anyone having to reveal their recipe.

Who uses this? This method isn't just for recipes—it's very useful in the real world where businesses need to work together but don’t want to share sensitive data.

Define MPC is one sentence! Multiparty computation helps everyone work together while keeping each person's data private and secure.

Unchained Events

It's that time of the year again! (?? Paris -> ?? Copenhagen).

Marguerite de Rodellec and I are so happy to host the healthcare track at the 6th edition of the The Nordic Blockchain Conference . We will be moderating two panels :

?? Web3 in Medicine: A New Frontier for Collaboration and Life-Saving Innovations (?? Filippo Frangioni , Benji Leibowitz , Micha?l Pressigout )

?? Empowering Patients With Web3: Are Health Systems Ready for the Revolution? (?? Jock Schulz , Christian Koerner , Kurt Nielsen )

Join us in Copenhagen on June 19th and 20th! Register here : https://www.nordicblockchain.com/conference2024

Podcast Prescription

?? In this week's episode, I talk to Mark Medum Bundgaard from Partisia Blockchain , a company that uses blockchain and multiparty computation to share sensitive data without compromising security and privacy.

?? What can I learn from this episode?

  • When you should create your own blockchain vs. when to use an existing one,
  • What is multiparty computation and when it should be used in healthcare,
  • How to sell your blockchain project to healthcare stakeholders and what challenges you should anticipate,
  • Where to incorporate your company for friendly regulation and great networking opportunities.

??? Listen to the episode wherever you get your podcast or on YouTube.

Press Pulse

?? It may not have made the top headlines, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth reading:

?? Metaverse-based cardiac magnetic resonance imaging simulation application for overcoming claustrophobia: a preliminary feasibility trial

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is vital, but claustrophobia affects 10% of patients. The metaverse, an immersive virtual and augmented reality environment, has healthcare potential. We present a metaverse-based CMR simulation for claustrophobic patients.

?? A blockchain-machine learning ecosystem for IoT-Based remote health monitoring of diabetic patients

Existing centralized monitoring systems often entail risks such as data breaches and single points of failure, emphasizing the necessity for a secure, decentralized approach that integrates the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and machine learning for efficient and secure diabetes management.

Before We Wrap Up...

?? Comment this post, and you and your project—be it a startup, podcast, newsletter, or any other initiative—will receive a spotlight in our upcoming newsletter edition for over 2500 people to see.

See you soon!

I hope there is still time for Blockchain to make an impact in this space however, during my 2022 MBA thesis on this topic, I exposed significant barriers (regulatory, culturally, incentive models and a resistance to technological adoption) that promise to stay in place for the next few years and will continue to hinder adoption.

Blockchain with AI, quantum and bio-tech will revolutionize the pharmaceutical industry. Would you agree It's more about a tapestry of tech, rather than a single one?
