With 780 million Chinese under travel restrictions, 16 million Italians quarantined, almost 3000 people in New York city, worries about quarantines due to Covid-19 are becoming a growing concern. What should you do?
Below is a short description of some action steps which can be taken in preparation of a potential quarantine. Covering: Work, Preparation, Supplies, Equipment, Community, Family, Cleanliness, Motivation.
Work: Check software availability to ensure smooth working from home where possible (meeting solutions, blackboards, chats, shared drives, etc). Ensure communication tools are available between staff and management (report conditions for quarantined staff, and coordinate requests for help)
Preparation: Anticipate 7 to 10 days isolation at home
Supplies: Try to have a two week supply of non-perishable food items. In addition to this disposable tissues, antibacterial wipes, latex gloves are recommended.
Equipment: A first aid kit with paracetamol (to reduce fever), a thermometer, prescription and non prescription medication.
Community: Discuss with friends and family for any support needed in case of grocery drops
Family: All family members should stay at home. Don't allow visitors. If there is a sick person they should be isolated as much as possible inside the house with a distance of a minimum of 1 meter. Don't share utensils, towels, etc.
Cleanliness: Ensure shared items are disinfected regularly. ( doorknobs, toilets, faucets, etc). Masks should be worn by sick people and when readily available. N95 or P2 masks are recommended. Disposable should be disposed after use and hands washed after disposing. Cloth masks should washed and tumble dried.
Motivation: Keep up daily routine as much as possible, keep in touch via social media, phone with friends and family. Ensure plenty of exercise like yoga, walking, exercise programs, etc. Stay busy by working from home, doing homework for kids. Use alone time and space appropriately. Don't rely too much on TV or social media for entertainment. Pick up a new hobby, draw, read, etc.
Last but not least, keep calm, positive and supportive to others. This is a difficult time for everyone.
