Facing Hiring Bias? Here’s What to Do

Let’s get straight to it: If an employer won’t invite you for an interview because of your age, gender, race, or any other factor, they’re actively discriminating. And guess what?

You don’t need to convince them to interview you. You need to move on.

Why?

Even if—by some stroke of luck—you land the job, you’ll constantly be under a microscope, second-guessed, and judged unfairly. That’s not a work environment you want to be in.

So, What’s the Solution?

Instead of trying to change biased employers, target the right ones. Ask yourself:

Are there people in your industry, in your geography, working at your level—who share your background?

If yes, then there are companies that hire based on merit—those are the ones you should focus on.

Resume Tweaks That Help

While you can’t control bias, you can make your resume stronger:

  • Remove experience older than 15-17 years (keep it relevant).
  • Skip your graduation year (it’s unnecessary).
  • Highlight new, in-demand skills to show you're staying ahead.

At the end of the day, your goal isn’t to prove yourself to companies stuck in the past. It’s to find the ones that value what you bring to the table.

So focus your energy on the right employers—and let the rest go.
