What does climate mean? What do climate changes mean?
? What does climate change mean?
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperature and weather patterns. These transformations may be natural and occur, for example, through changes in the solar cycle. However, since the nineteenth century, human activities have become the main cause of climate change, mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas. Burning fossil fuels produces greenhouse gas emissions that act like a blanket wrapping around the globe, trapping the sun's heat and raising temperatures. Examples of greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change include carbon dioxide and methane. These gases result, for example, from using gasoline to drive cars or coal to heat buildings. Clearing land of weeds, shrubs and deforestation can also release carbon dioxide. Landfills are a major source of methane emissions. The production and consumption of energy, industry, transportation, buildings, agriculture, and land use are among the major emitters.
Sharm El Sheikh summit
What is happening ?
?United Nations Climate Change Conference 2022
where?
Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt
When?
From November 6, 2022 to November 18, 2022
Who is hosting the conference and who is attending?
The conference is hosted by Egypt and is attended by world leaders from nearly 200 countries around the world.
Why do world leaders meet? What is the importance of the meeting, in other words?
Temperatures are rising frequently and rapidly in the last century for more than one reason, the most important of which is due to emissions produced by humans, mostly from burning fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal.
Global temperatures have risen 1.1°C and are heading towards 1.5°C, according to UN climate scientists, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
If temperatures rise 1.7 to 1.8°C above 1850s levels, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that half of the world's population could be exposed to life-threatening heat and humidity.
What will be discussed at COP27?
Before the meeting, countries were asked to submit ambitious national climate plans. Only 25 have done it so far.
COP27 will focus on three main areas:
? Reducing emissions
? Helping countries prepare for and deal with climate change
? Securing technical support and financing for developing countries for the above
What is the result of climate change on the globe?
? Extreme weather events are already becoming more severe around the world, threatening lives and livelihoods.
? With further warming, some areas may become uninhabitable, as agricultural land turns into desert. East Africa is currently facing its fifth season of failed rains, which the United Nations World Food Program says has put up to 22 million people at risk of severe hunger.
? Extreme temperatures can also increase the risk of wildfires - as we saw in Europe this summer. France and Germany recorded a nearly sevenfold increase in land burning between January and mid-July 2022, compared to the average.
? Rising temperatures also mean that previously frozen land will thaw in places like Siberia, releasing greenhouse gases that have been trapped for centuries into the atmosphere, exacerbating climate change.
? In other regions, heavy rainfall has caused historic floods - as seen recently in China, Pakistan and Nigeria.
? People living in developing countries are expected to suffer the most because they have fewer resources to adapt to climate change. But there is frustration with these countries because they produced the least greenhouse gas emissions.
To be more clear:
If the global temperature rise cannot be maintained within 1.5°C:
1. The UK and Europe will be vulnerable to flooding caused by heavy rain
2. The countries of the Middle East will experience severe heat waves and widespread drought
3. Pacific island nations may disappear under rising water
4. Many African countries are likely to suffer from drought and food shortages
5. Drought conditions are likely in the western United States, while other regions will experience more severe storms

6. Australia likely to suffer extreme temperatures and increased bushfire deaths
What is the role of governments, governmental and non-governmental organizations to confront the climate change crisis?
1. Introducing climate change and its dangers
2. Searching for other sources of energy as an alternative to fossil fuels
3. Enhancing scientific research in the field of sustainable energy
4. Stop subsidizing the production of devices and equipment that have a direct impact on climate change
5. Supporting and encouraging private sector initiatives to reach net zero.
6. Adopting policies, rewards and incentives for companies and individuals in the event that plans and initiatives are implemented
7. Supporting goods and services that are commensurate with the global trend of climate change
What is the role of individuals and small enterprises to face the crisis?
Small changes in our lives can have great effects
1. Living without a car or using an electric car
2. Take fewer flights
3. Reduce consumption of meat and dairy products
4. Reduce your energy use
5. Buying energy-saving products, such as washing machines, when they need to be replaced
6. Improve your home insulation
7. Switching from gas heating system to electric heat pump???
What does facility management mean?
"It is a system of systematic activities aimed at enhancing the quality of life in built facilities with the aim of creating a safe, healthy, sustainable and more productive environment while maintaining assets and properties in good condition and ensuring their readiness to face all kinds of risks."
Residential and non-residential facilities and climate change
? Establishments contribute 17.5% of the total gas emissions, while the steel and cement industry and the chemical sector together contribute 12.4%, which shows that investment in facilities management directly contributes to reducing gas emissions.
?? Facilities Managers (FM) on the front line in the battle against climate change. Residential and commercial real estate consumes about 40% of global energy. Furthermore, 85% of emissions from buildings occur during the asset's operational phase (the number of constructions and demolitions relative to the rest). This means that decisions made by facilities management professionals can have a significant impact when it comes to reducing building emissions.
What is the expected role of facilities management managers in facing the climate change crisis?
Facilities management for commercial and industrial buildings plays a pivotal role in reducing energy use and carbon emissions.
FM organizations around the world are already beginning to realize the value that digitalization brings, as a tool to combat climate change and manage energy efficiencies across the built environment.
COP27 represents a very important opportunity for facility managers, especially if new sustainability goals are agreed that will accelerate work to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Setting more ambitious goals, or more comprehensively applying existing standards, will encourage us all to play our part to protect our planet for generations to come.
A new way of doing things - environmentally
Modern environmental standards are designed to contribute to a sustainable environment while adding efficiency and cost savings to encourage adoption.
We need to embrace innovative digital solutions that provide intelligent insight into how utilities are performing, identify where improvements can be made, and provide a comprehensive view of energy consumption and asset health as well as external variables such as weather forecasts and energy costs.
More than 90% of the chemicals used comply with the EU standard Ecolabel, the EU's voluntary program for environmental excellence. This standard covers the life cycle of products: from extraction of raw materials to production, distribution and final disposal.
To get the most out of digitization and the potential for carbon savings, there are a few key things to be aware of
?First, any digital solution must be applied to the entire system. Monitoring multiple locations, parameters, and assets separately is not as efficient as combining these together in one integrated dashboard to better manage the complexities of energy demand and expand the achievable energy savings.
Second, digitization results in higher returns when combined with Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Of course, digital solutions on their own can support baseline and help identify where improvements can be made, but value creation happens when digital and hardware come together. This comprehensive approach has been used to great effect in our Frosinone plant in Italy, where we have saved 30 percent of energy and created a blueprint for other energy service companies to track.
For future proof facilities, FM facilities can also orchestrate their digital journey, and take an incremental approach to implementing an all-digital solution. For example, phased retrofitting of sensors will allow FM coils to start increasing energy efficiency, saving costs and reducing emissions as it builds additional functionality.
It should also be noted that digitization can increase the life span of key hardware, as it improves asset maintenance and monitoring. It's also a big commercial advantage because there's less downtime, unplanned maintenance, and FM benefits from lower capital expenditures on replacement equipment.
Ultimately, digitization and the ability to keep assets up and running for longer are inextricably linked: Improved digitization means facility management is better prepared for the expected and the unexpected.
By adopting sustainability policies, FMs can play a major role in the fight against climate change. With the right information at their fingertips at the right time, they can also take great strides toward delivering a sustainable future for all of us.
