Someone just snapped a picture of me during a workshop, and I look like I’m conducting Beethoven’s Fifth instead of guiding a room full of professionals. And you know what? They weren’t wrong.
A facilitator is a bit like an orchestra conductor. You don’t play the instruments yourself—you create the space for each musician (or participant) to shine. You set the rhythm, balance the dynamics, and sometimes give a dramatic cue to bring in the trumpets (or the person who’s been holding back all session).
Like a conductor, a facilitator deals with different personalities—your first violin (the experienced leader), your percussionist (the one who keeps things moving), and your trombone (who speaks only once, but shakes the room when they do). If you let them play at their own pace, it’s chaos. If you orchestrate too much, you kill the music.
The magic? Finding the groove where people listen, respond, and build something together. And sometimes, just like in a concert, the best moments come from an unexpected solo.
So yes, I may not have a baton, but in the right room, a well-placed gesture can turn a scattered group into a symphony.
