Facilitator 101

I've put together a quick guide for facilitation basics...

1. Understanding the Significant Roles of Facilitators

Facilitator pertains to an individual whose primary job is to manage the process of information exchange. While the expert’s role is to give advice regarding the content of discussions, the role of facilitator is to help with how discussions are proceeding. Generally, one of the major responsibilities of facilitators is addressing the journey rather than the destinations.

2. When Facilitation is Suitable

Facilitation approach is said to be appropriate when a particular organization is focused and concerned not just on all the decisions made, but how decision makers come up with the decision. Taking for instance, an organization might be getting rid of the autocratic management style and shifting to a participator one. So, to motivate the staff to adjust and embrace greater involvement, managers may act as facilitators rather than experts. In such case, long-term goals become as essential as getting better decisions.

3. Facilitators-Their Characteristics, Competencies and Roles

Those individuals involved in facilitation need to have ideal characteristics and competencies in order to become effective facilitators. A good facilitator must execute the following:

  • Uses space, time and resources intentionally
  • Evokes creativity and participation
  • Manages client relationship
  • Practices honoring groups and affirming wisdom
  • Maintains objectivity
  • Adapts to changing situations
  • Shares responsibility
  • Maintains his personal integrity
  • Demonstrates self confidence, authenticity and professionalism

Facilitators are also prepared to spend time on establishing relationships and initiating sensible discussions. They choose to ask for other people’s opinion rather than sticking to their own. The best facilitators are outgoing, persuasive, enthusiastic and systematic.

4. Facilitator Group Activities

Groups can be made to accomplish ongoing goals, get instructions and operate special tasks and more. During group activities, facilitators help the participants in terms of supplying the needed effort to achieve their individual capacity. In these activities, group standards must be set before gathering participants and explaining to them the anticipated conduct all throughout the process. Requirements in these group activities include paying respect to personal discretion, encouraging timeliness and distinct output and leaving out the negativity. These activities need facilitators for more meaningful and successful outcomes.

5. Other Tasks Completed by a Facilitator

Facilitators are often hired to help facilitate in projects, conferences, trainings and facilitator team activities. Facilitators verify that the most essential and suitable agenda has been created in connection with the objectives and goals. They will then spread these records and other resources carefully ahead of time. A facilitator is also responsible for reminding individuals about events along with confirmed conversation schedule details like time or place.

6. Benefits of Facilitation

Using ideal facilitation in the workplace can bring enormous sets of benefits. Since the role of facilitator specifically focuses on the process, individuals can get on worthy purpose as well as outcomes and they can concentrate fully. Well-facilitated meetings are said to create value and provide better solutions. Facilitations are learnable and are contributory to the success of teams and organizations in general. Facilitators also clarify roles to key participants leading to a clearer understanding of their roles.

I believe the greatest tool a facilitator has is 'questioning' ...to create an environment for engaging in deeper thought about your subject ....then step back from the limelight and let the group find their own solutions. They will have more meaning . Love love love facilitating - specially the challenging groups - you just never know where they will take you!
