Faces of Ambar: Alexa

Faces of Ambar: Alexa

Not all heroes wear capes, and Alexa is one of them. She’s the Head of Community Management (SMM), one of the first employees of Ambar Soluciones SA (self-proclaimed ‘dinosaur’), and the first anonymous team member. With such an impactful position, it’s only natural to avoid the attention of headhunters!

‘My career in Ambar Soluciones SA began when I tried to find a job here in Barcelona. At the time, there were not enough opportunities for people without an advanced level of Spanish or Catalan, so I applied for work as the Customer Support Manager. 2.5 years later, I became an SMM manager.’

But it wasn’t a sudden change. Alexa prepared herself for a career in community management in advance, studying online and managing her personal blog.

‘I worked in Customer Support for 2 years until I realised I needed to make a career change. As a graduate majoring in Law, I could consider pursuing that path, but I didn’t find it thrilling. With communication being one of my strong suits, I decided to learn Social Media Management in my free time.’

Colleagues were aware of Alexa’s aspirations. She was transparent about her interests, which helped her find opportunities within the team.

‘Our company was growing rapidly at the time, and one of our HRs was looking for an SMM Community Manager. They asked me to try myself in this area. I could finally apply my theoretical knowledge in practice, so I swiftly accepted the offer.’?

Alexa’s new job was much more demanding and impactful. She began her new career from scratch without experienced colleagues to rely on.

‘I thought it would be an easy transition from Customer Support, but it wasn’t as simple: I had to be everywhere as the only SMM Community Manager in our team. Thankfully, our subscriber count across social networks was fairly small at the time. It helped me get the hang of my new responsibilities, and after a year on the post, I was confident in my ability to build and manage communities.’

Soon enough, the company’s rapid expansion presented an opportunity for Alexa. A chance to test her own limits and see the team’s limits being tested.

‘When the company entered new markets, I began seeing lots of new faces. People were texting me daily, and I had no idea who they were! We witnessed the new position that our company secured on the international market. In social media discussions, our clients began comparing us to big players.’

No growth comes without complications––especially when the changes are rapid and unpredictable. Alexa’s team had to adapt and persevere.

‘The team faced some scalability issues along the way. Our numbers grew weekly, and our online presence tripled in size within three years. But after some time, our workflow became much more streamlined. We still have a lot of requests, but we’re able to handle them thanks to teamwork and clever management.’

When the scale of one’s work changes rapidly, it becomes increasingly more difficult to manage relationships. Looking back on the team chemistry that Alexa experienced at the beginning of her career, she feels nostalgic.?

‘Initially, the team was small. We all knew each other. I knew everyone’s roles and responsibilities. But now, the teams are growing so fast that it becomes hard to recall who’s doing what. I meet new people every week.’

When the team grew from a dozen to hundreds, our team members grew more distant from each other. Alexa felt that too, but to her, the company’s growth introduced not just complications but opportunities as well.

‘On the bright side, new hires bring great diversity of cultures, opinions, and qualifications into the team. They make daily meetups interesting and insightful. You can even practise languages! For example, I practised my Polish, French, Spanish, and Catalan. Now I’m just waiting for a German native!’

All things considered, Alexa feels comfortable in her current circumstances. She has an interesting and impactful job, works at a stable yet growing international company, and sees friendly faces daily. What else can one ask for?

‘Our team has this really cool cooperative ambience. I’m surrounded by professionals ready to share their experiences and knowledge, brainstorm ideas, and develop unique solutions. I’m grateful for this, and I love what I do.’
