Facemasks - a challenge for the Security sector?

At SGC Security Services, we’re proud to be a Security company that puts safety first. We ensure that when it comes to the welfare of our customers and our own employees, we leave nothing to chance, which is why we’ve been awarded the ‘Safe Contractor’ accreditation with regard to our Health & Safety Management Systems.
Of course, we’re also aware that mask-wearing has become mandatory in certain public buildings due to the on-going pandemic, and therefore security companies have needed to take additional precautions to face this challenge.
Security companies must adapt to face-masks
The first buildings to be affected by new rules surrounding face-coverings were of course shops and supermarkets. More public spaces were later added to the new rules at the end of July, including cinemas, museums, storage and distribution facilities, public areas in hotels and hostels, and places of worship.
The more widespread use of facemasks is becoming has of course presented some implications for each and every security company out there. As not only do face-masks present potential problems in terms of Security camera effectiveness, they also affect facial recognition and impact other risks too. Meaning Security providers have and will need to continually adapt to this new norm.
Contingencies that a Security company must make
Thankfully, well-trained Security teams from experienced Security companies shouldn’t be impacted too much by facemasks becoming more commonplace. This is because experienced security providers should be able to constantly adapt to a changing Security landscape and the introduction of mandatory face coverings is no different.
Security officers who have undergone the best high-quality training will be able to intricately monitor behavior to quickly spot activity that may be suspicious. These skills will be more vital than ever, now that most individuals will be wearing a face-covering in buildings.
A security company that utilises a layered approach; from using a highly-visible Manned Security presence to effectively integrating technology solutions, and proactive intelligence through a Security operations centre - will be able to ensure face coverings don’t impact any building security. Of course, security officers who don’t quite recognise an individual inside a premises can still ask them to drop the mask.
A clear policy is needed
Further issues that Security teams could face regarding face-coverings will be centered around governance. If face masks are left to the discretion of individuals within a corporate environment, for example, Security will have to rely on building-by-building procedures in terms of enforcement.
So, clear policies as to the wearing of face masks within a building are critical at this time, as only with clear policies will Security officers be able to operate most effectively. Also, if face-mask usage continues to increase, building access may become a longer process for those needing to gain entry.
It may mean access to buildings could take a few seconds longer due to certain verification processes, as facial recognition technology will require a quick temporary removal of masks for example. Clear communication between Security teams and building management teams will be more critical than ever, in order to educate personnel on the changing processes. This will ensure a smooth transition as people know what to expect.
