Facebook Whistleblower to Address Oversight Board
The most important thing in tech today is …
Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen will speak to the Oversight Board,?potentially complicating Facebook’s defense against accusations that it has withheld information from institutions that could hold it accountable.
Facebook thus far has positioned Haugen’s characterizations of the company as inaccurate, based on a bad-faith reading of its research data and limited access to top executives.?But if the Oversight Board, which Facebook itself has set up as an independent quasi-judiciary, concludes that Haugen’s assertions have merit, Facebook management may find it impossible to continue dismissing them.
The Oversight Board figures prominently into Facebook’s argument that it cares about doing the right thing. We might soon see what happens when that board calls on Facebook to pursue structural changes it would rather not make.
