Facebook Vs Twitter: Where Should You Invest For More ROI?!
Philippe TREBAUL
Chief Executive Officer at BeeMouv - Instagram : @beemouv - Twitter : @beemouv ??
I have been minding about a strategy for marketing Socialfave on Facebook and Twitter and once I decided to test both, to compare.
I began implementing it.
Our following were growing. The engagement was bigger and bigger.
I opened up Google Analytics and I discoverd that the web trafic from each channel was rocking and rolling.
And suddenly, I noticed a drastic drop in impressions and engagement on Facebook.
The web traffic was slowing down.
I wonder what happened to all your social conversions.
In fact, Facebook had just made another one of its famous updates – another algorithm change that brought organic reach totally down !
And with Twitter, because Twitter let see you 1% of all the tweets, only (it’s to know), our promotion to grow the number of followers was with no surprise gradually going also !
Twitter impressions and engagement have never really been that high to begin with – if you got a few each week along with some clicks to your website, you were happy !
With tweets only having a shelf life of about 60 minutes (only...), knowing additionally that people see your tweet during 6 seconds only, what could you expect?!
I noticed that I was strongly losing time and spending money managing Facebook and Twitter with no results !
First, I decided to spend more, minding I had not choosen the right budget to reach a level of efficience on these two platforms, because I was staying ? obsseded ? by wanting our content to get seen.
And I was spending more and more money adding social media advertising into our marketing mix.
Now, I know more about advertising on both platform, and I want to share this knowledge with you.
Facebook Advertising, for Business:
- Greater reach
Facebook Advertising allows users to reach millions of people, that is sure !
Here’s what came up when I ran a broad test to reach marketers in the United States.
2. Targeted reach
One of the features of Facebook Advertising that turned us into fans was the targeted reach it offers.
We were able to narrow in on our clients’ ideal audience.
Since its launch, Facebook Advertising has only become more and more advanced, easy to use (very intuitive).
Today, we can narrow down everything from salary, purchase behavior, life events, and so much more.
Here’s what your targeting might look like.
Not only can you reach prospects through targeted reach, but you can also reach people who already follow your company page, in addition to their friends.
3. It can be inexpensive
We’ve ran campaigns for as little as $2.50 a day. Facebook gives users a great deal of flexibility in pricing.
You don’t have to spend a fortune.
You stop your ? boosted ? posts, pages, sites very simply, just by clicking on buttons ? On-off ? as many times as you wish it.
And we fix the period you want very easily (you can stop when you want, or in the opposite, add budget to make it beeing longer).
Facebook Advertising – The Cons
The only real con we have to point out is the fact that you do have to pay to play.
While $2.50 a day might not seem like much, it can be a lot for a small business owners, as I was!
Twitter Advertising for Business
Like with Facebook Advertising, the first two pros overlap. Twitter Advertising offers greater, targeted reach.
It’s not as advanced as Facebook Advertising in terms of targeting (and if it is, it doesn’t show it).
Facebook advertising knows and uses: all … where you sleep, where you eat, what you eat, if you have kids … Facebook knows ALL about you!
Here is how it looks on Twitter.
Twitter Advertising – The Cons
1. Not user-friendly, compared to Facebook
Facebook Advertising is easy to use, as I have said above.
Setting up and running ads on Twitter in my opinion, is really not user-friendly, because much more complicated to set it up.
With Facebook Advertising I can type in whatever I want.
With Twitter Advertising, you have many extra steps that need to be taken in order to get the targeting on point and I can’t always find what I need.
2. Spam, spam, everywhere
Despite targeting my campaigns as well as Twitter Advertising will let me, I get more spam accounts following the accounts I advertise from because of the ads.
If they are not spam, they are rarely prospects.
3. Twitter Advertising is very expensive!
Where I would pay $1 per click for a Facebook ad I would pay $5 on a Twitter ad.
So, Twitter Advertising is much more expensive than Facebook can be!
While we’ve had much better success with Facebook Advertising, we’ve been able to get some traction with Twitter advertising too, including follower growth and website traffic that has not all been IRRELEVANT.
So, to be frank, I prefere much more my Facebook Advertising experiences than my Twitter ones !
But I encourage you to explore both starting off with a SMALL budget (and it much less easy on Twitter because of fixed budget, in advance).
When to advertise on Facebook and Twitter
If your business is brand new to Facebook or Twitter, you might be tempted to quickly begin advertising.
But remember that you have not to buy followers, even if it can be very tempting on Twitter.
Why ?
Because they will not be targeted enough to your business, and to the content you share.
So, you will receive back ZERO engagement, and this point SHOULD be your FIRST priority, as a Marketer.
Build your success organically and save your money, by derving your followers!
First, build a foundation (lists…teams, and so on, by interacting with your followers).
To succed with this step, don’t forget that, behind the word followers you have…HUMANS.
Never forget this key point while Networking on Twitter, because it’s truly a crucial one.
And just mind very simply after than Humans CAN’T BE bought , just !
Minding this way, you’ll better adapt your behavior, including your interactions, but also the content you share, in order to better interest them.
Even mind when you want to share it during a period of 24 hours, depending on many factors connected to your audience and…your target.
Create and share amazing content on your timeline. Use appropriated and targeted hashtags, to make your content being more relevant. And don’t forget these rules on Twitter :
- A tweet with a link and an image, it’s 50% more engagement.
- Using one hashtag, you will add 25% to engage with other users, and a second 25% more. But, at the opposite, using 3 hashtags, you will decrease these result by 25%, and 25% more with a fourth one.
- Use targeted hashtags, adapted to the content you share, and to the audience you want to reach, and to engage with. So, on Twitter, the rule is using 2 targeted hashtags (while on Facebook it’s also 2, but one targeted, specific to YOUR business, YOUR audience, YOUR content; and 11 more on Google Plus and Instagram).
After you’ve established a foundation, use Facebook and Twitter advertising to SUPPLEMENT your efforts.
Earn your followers, engagement, and web traffic before you essentially buy it. You need to DESERVE them !
If you’re a company that has been on each channel for a while and already has that foundation, go for it but tread carefully.
Before running your first campaign, lay out:
- Why you want to advertise – what your goals are.
- How much time and money you can spend.
- What you’ll promote and when you’ll promote it.
- How you’ll measure your efforts.
Here’s to your success!

8 年Very informative Philippe.. Twitter is having problems right now, they are #shadowbanning power users.. Relying heavily on the promoted tweets. And battling falling stock prices.. However, I do really like the Twitter analytics,, It shows you exactly where you are at.. I have not been a big fan of facebook.. For business use, like yours, I see it is way better.. They are constantly changing algorythm .. And I dont care for the way they show us our home feed.. Selecting what to show us.. Thank you Philippe.. Great read, lots of insight..
