Facebook vs. Apple: Will a Legal Battle end the 10-Year Tension?

It is impossible for tech enthusiasts not to feel the tension between Facebook and Apple’s CEO. Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook have been throwing shades on each other’s lawn. And they are not even trying to hide it. If you are not yet updated about the “tea,” yet, read on, and we’ll catch you up with the latest update. Will this end up in court? We’ll have to see.

What’s the tension all about?

Facebook and Apple’s relationship could be really beneficial for both tech giants if you think about it. Facebook needs Apple gadget owners to boost its products, while Apple needs Facebook apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and the likes. So, what the reason behind their fight? You might not know these, but you’re actually involved.

Your history and privacy online is the biggest factor of their clash. Apple is accusing Facebook of illegally “collecting gobs of personal data” from its users. Of course, Facebook immediately responded, calling Apple’s product expensive and serving only the globe’s elite.

What has happened so far?

Apple and Facebook have been going on and about these accusations and reasoning for years. There has been a lot of indirect message during speeches, newspaper ads, and tweets. Here what how the brawl has been going on so far:

  • The birth of Facebook was an absolute game-changer for what Apple has been trying to build for years. Facebook is playing on the open-internet arena while Apple has been gatekeeping its users, pushing them to only find and install apps from its very own app store. This was probably the intro to these on-going brawls.
  • From then on, Apple has been roasting Facebook about its privacy policies every opportunity they got. As far back as 2010, the audience believes that the late Steve Jobs has indirectly warned Zuckerberg about privacy. With Zuckerberg watching and waiting for his turn on the interview, Jobs defined what privacy meant. How Apple views privacy differently compared to its colleagues in the same industry.
  • Even after the change of management, Apple is still on to Facebook. Tim Cook, Apple’s current CEO, openly said in a conference that they could have followed Facebook in selling people information, but they elected not to do that. The feud even escalated on national TV when Apple’s privacy campaign was released with the tagline “Some things shouldn’t be shared – iPhone helps you keep it that way.”
  • Here’s what Facebook has to say. According to Mark, Apple’s vendetta toward them is so they can push their own data collection. Making it impossible for other competitors and industry to use the data collected. And thus, crushing small businesses that rely on targeted ads. “They say it’s about privacy– but it’s about profit,” Zuckerberg directly to Apple.
  • Currently, both companies are in the works of releasing a feature on devices regarding privacy and data. This is what Apple is working on, according to Tim Cook.

  • While Facebook was working on a prompt that asks users to allow the display of personalized ads for a better experience and support small businesses. Which attack will come off first? We’ll have to wait.

Will it end in Federal Court?

In the talks of legality, Facebook is currently on the upper hand against Apple. Facebook, together with Epic Games and Fortnite, is building an anti-trust lawsuit accusing AppStore to the disadvantage of the competitors. But FB is not yet safely out of the woods. Will Apple fight back with another legal action? The saga continues…
