The two social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta, one of the most popular in the world are currently experiencing a major outage that has made it impossible for many of its users to access their accounts, feed or update any content. This problem also extends to Facebook Messenger and Threads.
This issue started on a Tuesday afternoon around 3 pm GMT on March 5th, 2024 and at the time of writing this article, it had stayed for over three hours. According to Down Detector, an online service disruption tracking website, this breakdown is something that can be seen in various parts of the world including the USA, Europe Asia as well as Australia. Some people also faced problems with WhatsApp although we may not know how big these issues were.
There isn’t any official explanation from Meta explaining what caused this problem yet but its communications Director Andy Stone tweeted that they were aware of the situation and working towards resolving it.“We are aware some people are having trouble accessing our services so we will fix it,” he wrote.
Users have responded with anger and confusion through other platforms like Twitter and Reddit where they also posted memes about this blackout. Their privacy was at risk since they were logged out of their profiles while others could not.
