Facebook Eats Emotions for Breakfast

I was on Quora this weekend, and I noticed the emotional tone of the online memes of the day. Trump about to win as the Republican candidate, this was February 28th, 2016. Quora identified what I already knew:
Facebook has Launched Reactions for Everybody!
Oh hell! A joyous world filled with so much color, depth and well, emojis. I realized then and there, my world would never be the same.
Facebook loves to parade quantity over quality. It likes to boast how many video views it had, and how many users have a facebook account. With 1.6 billion active monthly users, Facebook is ready to do Big Data like never before.
This means creating a system where each individual's tendencies can be mapped out based upon their consumer preferences. This is a unique selling proposition, if your "likes" can be mined for insights about how brands, ads and even how your personality influences your shopping-patterns, then I can exploit this in any number of ways.
Facebook, loves to "experiment" on its users. Make no mistake, it doesn't care about Indians without internet, it doesn't care about how many addicted teens and their lives it ruined, it cares about how to use your data for profit.
Now that's Facebook's reach is so enormous, and mobile add-blockers with Millennials is decreasing their gigantic mobile add revenue, Facebook needed to do something big. Something that would increasingly monetize their value, the said millions of people who use Facebook for mostly communication (Facebook messenger) and keeping tabs on their social network around the world.
The User Experience
Real-time emoji reactions to trends, means the perfect sentiment analytics data-mining opportunity. Users volunteer all kinds of insights about their preferences, their moods, their reactions and this kind of data has just endless opportunities for greedy tech companies with a plan for world domination.
As a user, I can now show my "empathy" by crying with you by your side in your misfortune. I can be angry at content I find distasteful or matters of injustice common in our world.
I can also love you like never before, the super-like enchants with a big-hearted experience!
Add all of these factors up in a given month, year and lifetime - and I have the data for algorithms to nearly perfectly profile you in such a way as to create a blueprint about how to convert you to buy and what you are most likely to be interested in.
- What makes you laugh
- What makes you go "wow" and show you are impressed, surprised or stunned!
- What kind of content are you most likely to love, rather than just like?

9 年I love emails that start out "I saw your picture on Facebook". I don't have an account. I prefer to talk with my friends.

9 年We live in a world where data is currency. We use things like GMail, Facebook, Twitter, and other "free" services. However, the cost to run these sites is not free. So, as they begin to monetize the sites, yes, they have a lot of personal data on us to show us targeted ads. But it is the trade off we make for using the free service, unfortunately.

9 年"Manipulate people's moods and behaviour" -- extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Don't see any. I guess you're just wanting to manipulate us into being angry, Mark?

9 年Does anybody know that if you just click 'Angry' to anything & everything if the algorithm thingies will pick that up & just not send any ads to that person? IE - Just 'Hate/Angry' EVERYTHING for a week or so & see what happens......? Hopefully the software will 'learn' that you hate everything, ever (even if you don't), & stop wasting time & money sending adverts. That is what I would like to see happen anyway. Just make sure to put a post up to your 'friends' that you are doing an experiment & ask them to not think you are personally 'angry' at them 1st)

9 年I don't like facebook. I tried it once and didn't like it. Luckily I only posted quotes and not my family photos and comments.
