Facebook is dying

please forgive me if I am gonna simplify marketing and advertising and facebooking, but I am trying to keep this article short and easy to understand.
The past
Facebook is dying. The enterprise might be around for some years more, but the constant change of strategy, functionality, contradictions and offers make it clear that Zuckerberg is trying to keep his enterprise alive in any way possible. Let's face it, we stopped checking and caring with what was happening on facebook. Many have many theories, mine, is just of one thing. The excess Advertisment is killing facebook.
Do not get me wrong, I love marketing, the process of understanding consumers is something that I really enjoy while creating strategies in order to create value for a product/brand or generating leads. Nevertheless marketing is a dating process, and many many people are skipping the process of meeting, knowing each other better, dinner and then something else. Tinder nowadays is the perfect example of how marketing is not so well done. You swipe on someone, and hope to find true love…yeah right… finding true love seems to not be anymore the functionality of 65% of the users tinder. Tinder is literally selling pornography and everybody seems to go with it. I wonder what is the main reason of all this? In my opinion is because Marketers confuse marketing with Advertisement. Look at the perfect example as an add of a "marketing agency":
When did ever SEO become advertisement? My mind gets filled with frustration and confusion over marketing companies being greedy and jumping the marketing strategic point. Never the less, let's get back to facebook.
The Present
As I was writing, Facebook is dying because of an excess of advertisement. Did you know that 11 years ago when I opened my facebook account, I would see 1 ad, sometimes, in the left side pane? 11 years after I see an ad every 3 or 4 publications, and publications that honestly, I am not at all interested in clicking and reading.
Marketing you see, became something that people take it as direct advertisement and share it immediately. There is no thinking process about generating engagement, there is no concern about creating value, identifying a certain type of client, and spare others lives from reading and seeing publications that do not matter at all. Here's an example. 11 Years ago you would open facebook and see photos from the previous night that your buddies would have shared while partying. My buddies happen to be musicians, so I got most of the times party publications, orchestra rehearsals and for a little bit request to feed the pigs on FarmVille.
Nowadays the same friends, still keep the same job, but their publications are about posts about environment, news, Tesla, and Property investments. Why in the world, if I was still a musician, would I be interested in Tesla and Property investment?
If I open my facebook app as of the moment, I will see mostly news about tesla, environment, some ads about marketing agencies selling directly their services, and other type of advertisement that facebook thinks I am interested in. Sounds fun? To me not. That is the main reason why I do not check facebook anymore.
The future
Greediness is driving enterprises and marketing agencies, and I really hope the future will be brighter than it is right now. I strongly believe the social media platforms can be used to connect people and for marketers to understand people. I mostly identify psychological client profiles by analysing a certain persons facebook and instagram but please spare me of watching the so many and uncontrolled ads.
I have been resuming marketing and advertising to basic conceptions and forgive me about that, but it is my strongly believe that facebook is going to die. Marketing agencies selling subscriptions of their services will go bankrupt because their services do not provide quality anymore. And people will start hating facebook and social media. Time for a change then?

5 年Thank you, great article! I agree about your points here, but I don't think that increase in ads is the big issue in the decline of interest in Facebook. A much more severe problem is that the algorithms of today close down the circles of people too much, and people have started noticing it and get bored about reaching out to the same small circle of friends all the time. Soundcloud for example has had a similar development in function and it has lost its broad reach to the users. I think we all can live with a lot of ads in the stream if the funktion of reaching out to all of our Facebook friends would work as it once did. Best regards, Carl L.
