Facebook Basics for the Overwhelmed: Decoding Page Types and a Clear Guide to Changing Ownership

Looking to transfer a Facebook business page to someone else, but you're not sure where to start? Maybe you claimed a Facebook page by mistake, or you're selling your business and need to transfer everything, including your Facebook pages.?

Either way, if you're reading this, Facebook is currently the bane of your existence and the main reason your heart rate keeps increasing every time you log on.

As a growth marketing strategist, I've seen it all. Every digital channel has its kinks; it's my job to learn, fix, and then optimize them. In this article, I'll break down the difference between Business Accounts and Business Pages and give you a simple six-step process to transfer a Business Page from one Business Account to another. And for my visual learners, there is a crudely designed visual to go along with the instructions.?

Our goal for this article? Lower your blood pressure and check off one more ‘side quest’ mission from our lovely friends at Meta.

Honestly? You’ve spent enough time trying to figure this out already, so enough with the chitchat, let’s jump right in.

What is the difference between a Facebook Business Account and a Facebook Business Page?

Business Account: This is your overarching account that can host multiple Business pages. This is where your payment information is stored. You can’t post anything or answer messages through a business account.?

Example: Your business account is like the store owner; they’re not out on the floor, but they control the money and the separation of assets/financial accounts.?AKA, your business account has the credit card attached and pays the bills for whatever pages live within it.

Business Page: You can post, send messages, and manage specific information, but you cannot run paid ads without a business account. These pages can be transferred to different business accounts.

Example: Sticking with the store, the business pages would be the representatives on the floor talking and interacting with the customers. They work under the store owner but can be transferred to and from different stores.?

How do I transfer my Facebook Page from one Business Account to another?

There are six steps involved in transferring a Facebook Page from one business account to another. You have two options for initiating and completing the transfer:?

Option One: If you have admin access to both business accounts (aka a ‘super admin’ or a willingness for all parties to participate, you can complete the transfer yourself.

Option Two: Parties are unable to create a ‘super’ admin who is an admin on both the Business Account that owns the Facebook Page and the Business Account that needs ownership.?This could be due to a Business Account owner who doesn't know how/or refuses to to provide access.

The steps are customized for both options, scroll down to the one more relevant to you.

If you want to access your Business Account, this link should take you to all the Business Accounts you’re a part of.

?OPTION ONE:?

Both parties are willing to work together and create one admin on all pages and accounts (aka you).

STEP ONE & TWO:?

Grant access to the business accounts and business pages in question.

YOUR TASKS (AKA The Transferer)?

  • Request to be added to the Business Account as an Admin by the new Business Owner?- Provide them with your personal email attached to your personal account- Once they add you as an admin, you should get an email letting you know you’re invited to that Business Account. Click the email and fill out the relevant information.- Check spam if the email doesn’t show up- Verify that you are an admin by checking the drop-down under Meta Business, both accounts should show up under the lefthand side (both with Settings Graphics to the righthand side)

ADMIN GRANTOR (Second party taking ownership of the page after you transfer AKA The New Page Owner)

  • Access Facebook Meta Business Suite
  • Settings -> Related Business Account (that the page should be transferred to) -> Select People (add in the email attached to the transferer) -> Confirm the Transferer received the invite email?
  • Once this is confirmed, you will receive confirmation of the transfer and be responsible for removing the Transferer from the Business Page

STEP THREE:?

Access the page to begin the transfer process.

YOUR TASKS (AKA The Transferer)

  • Under your business account, find the business page you are looking to transfer?
  • Click on the page, and you should see Summary/Page Access/Connected Assets show up along with the page ID

ADMIN GRANTOR (Second party taking ownership of the page after you transfer AKA The New Page Owner)

N/A

STEP FOUR & FIVE:?

Disconnect any assets (Instagram, ad account, etc).

YOUR TASKS (AKA The Transferer)

  • First, you will disconnect (1.) any Instagram or additional accounts from the Facebook Business Page- If you have been using Instagram through Meta, just log in to Instagram through a separate window to make sure that you still know the password/username. You or the new admin will have to log in after the transfer is complete to reconnect the Instagram account- This will not delete or revoke access to Instagram, this just disconnects it from the Facebook page (once it’s disconnected, you just won’t be able to post through Instagram on Meta Business Suite until it’s reconnected)
  • Click Ad account (2.) and see if you have an ad account connected to this Facebook page- If you don’t, proceed to the next step- If you do, follow the same steps and disconnect your Facebook Page from the ad account
  • Once those are done, click the three dots next to your Facebook Page that need to be transferred (3.) and click Remove Business Account- If any errors pop up, find the associated error and remove it from the business account- If no errors pop up, confirm the removal

ADMIN GRANTOR (Second party taking ownership of the page after you transfer AKA The New Page Owner)

N/A

STEP SIX:?

Reclaim the page through the new Business Account.

YOUR TASKS (AKA The Transferer)

  • If you are an admin on both Business Accounts, click on the new business account -> settings -> Pages -> Add pages -> Claim an existing Facebook Page
  • Once you hit claim an existing Facebook Page, enter the URL associated with the Facebook Page you’re looking to transfer
  • If you want to reconnect Instagram, you can connect assets back (Step Four/Five)- Business Account -> Accounts -> Pages -> Connect Assets -> Connect Instagram

ADMIN GRANTOR (Second party taking ownership of the page after you transfer AKA The New Page Owner)

  • Confirm transfer and remove old admins from the Business Page and Business Account

OPTION TWO:?

Both parties are unable to create a ‘super’ admin who is an admin on both the business account that owns the Facebook Page and the Business Account that needs ownership.?

STEP ONE & TWO:?

Grant access to the business accounts and business pages in question.

YOUR TASKS (AKA The Transferer)?

  • Get the email associated with the new Page Owner’s personal Facebook profile
  • Make sure your personal profile is also an admin on the Facebook Profile (sometimes your Business Account will be the only admin, making sure you’re a personal admin helps ensure an easy transition)- Sometimes, another admin will need to add your personal Facebook Profile
  • Make sure the new owner is an admin on the Facebook Page itself- Click through your Business Page -> New Pages Experience -> Page Access -> Add the new owner through personal email/profile as an admin
  • Once that person is added, you will complete Steps Three through Five, and they will complete Step 6

ADMIN GRANTOR? (Second party taking ownership of the page after you transfer AKA The New Page Owner)

  • Find the Page Admin invite through personal notifications or go directly to the Facebook Page URL and click the accept option right before the image banner
  • Confirm admin access
  • You will be responsible for completing the transfer (Step Six)

Hi Lexi, I would absolutely love your help! I am having an absolute mare trying to connect a Facebook page with an Instagram page in Meta Business Suite. I have full control of both, but I'm not an admin in the business portfolio and no-one knows who is! Is this something you can help with at all?
