Face Value

More and more, our workplaces are truly becoming global. As we engage with teams all over the world, participate in video conferences, and travel across the world (or even down the street), let us not forget the value of the face.
What does that mean?
Be engaged: When you find yourself in a video conference - though I am as guilty of this as the next person - PUT THE SALAD DOWN. Video conferences are opportunities for you to connect with your peers or clients, and the last thing anyone wants to see is you stuffing kale into your mouth.... but if you are mowing down on a cheeseburger, you may have a case. Kidding! If you are occupied with your food, you are not focused on what is happening on the screen. And the simple shift of eye contact from your peer to your meal is enough to break a significant moment that could positively impact your relationship.
Get moving: I love LinkedIn. I love that LinkedIn has offices around the world. I love that at this moment, I am writing this blog post out of our London office (the pics above are from our awesome office). Granted, I know that not everyone has the luxury of being able to work out of other offices, but if you get the chance, take it. Being present also includes your physical presence; having a lunch with someone you've only ever talked to on the phone will help to build friendship and trust, by virtue of your colleagues being able to see how you are in action when you work. And that is an awesome opportunity.
Think creatively: Sometimes, people you really like and enjoy working with don't sit in the same office as you. What can you do about that? Make a date. Set a virtual lunch date and eat via video conference (I know I told you not to eat on video conferences earlier - you get that this is a different scenario, right? Because it is.) Schedule video calls where you problem solve and/or whiteboard issues together. Do video calls where you review the good, the bad and the ugly about your business - even if you're working from home. Or just schedule times where you can look at your friend's smile - it will change your whole day.
Your face. It's fantastic and wonderful and mirrors what you're feeling inside. As you work remotely or speak with colleagues and clients here and all over the world, don't underestimate the power that your engagement holds. Remember the value of your face.
