When the skin continuity is broken by a cut, surgery or injury, the body forms a scar tissue to unite the cut ends. The amount of scarring could vary due to various factors like the person’s age, heredity, race, and the type, direction, depth, size and location of the wound. When the scar is removed, a new scar is formed by the body in its place. So a scar cannot be removed. It can only be revised.
By the scar correction operations, many scars can be improved upon in their appearance or the amount of the scars can be reduced are disfigurement can be minimised. These scar correction operation are not under taken until the original scars have fully matured. There are rare exceptions to this rule. There are scars that cannot be improved upon by surgery.
Most scar revision procedure are done in the operating theatre under local or general anaesthesia and usually do not require overnight stay in the hospital.
