Thank you Suba for recommending book ‘Blink’- The power of thinking without thinking by Malcom Gladwell. Biases of subconscious mind are well articulated in the book with numerous examples.
In the chapter of ‘Seven Seconds in the Bronx’, Malcom has narrated the story of NYPD Street shooting gone wrong. What has intrigued me is the analysis of 3 mistakes of snap judgement.
Author has elaborated the study done by Ekman and Friesen on facial expressions and underlining mind readings. Details around Facial Action costing system (FACS) are interesting yet scary. Your face is THE signal about what’s going on in the mind. Each muscle is the reflection of mind.
Snap judgments can be controlled with conscious effort to understand intricacies of expressions. But it’s another reason why facial technology is so highly regulated. As the technology evolves, scenarios for opportunities will emerge. Balance of technology and individual choices will be crucial.
“The face is mirror of mind and eyes without speaking confess the secrets of the heart” - St Jerome
There is more to this book and I am exploring it chapter by chapter.
We have a say in Tamil - 'Agathin azhagu mugathil' - means, Face is the index of your mind. Look forward to you sharing your experience reading other pages of Blink too Aparna
