The Face of EMS has Changed
You may have originally gotten into EMS to help people in their time of sickness. Never once thinking that one day you will basically need to behave and think like a police officer. After all, if you had wanted to become a cop you would have right? EMS providers are accustomed to delving into harrowing situations and staring death in the face on a daily basis, but it’s usually not their own lives that are in peril.
What we have found is that EMS are expected to deal with crime scenes and, criminals just as police are but, have received no training. You won't be arresting them but, what if something happens while you're there and, police haven't been called? Most of the time you barely get enough money for the equipment you need, much less ask for more training for the daily dangers you are now expected to face.
A phrase we have uttered numerous times during our training. Scene safety is literally drilled into us throughout our training; then not so much, as our careers take off. Even though we are repeatedly told to observe scene safety, we are taught very little about "how" to ensure it, and "how" to deal with a scene that turns unsafe around us. Once you leave the safety of the station, it is a great idea to remain cautious, yet vigilant on your mission. Being prepared for anything and personal safety, go hand in hand when responding to all calls for help. Be aware of what you hear, what you see, and what you feel, while on any call; no matter how routine.
