No Face No Case, Call Me A Silent Learner!
Growing up in Banten Indonesia and currently entering my fourth year of college, that's me, Pete! Fun fact, I prefer to progress quietly, I tend not to tell or publish anything during the progress of learning something, familiarly called a silent learner. Usually, people who like progress and are productive in my environment think that I am an extrovert. I feel lucky to be able to grow, progress, and be surrounded by people who are like me.
I have few friends, my close friends are mostly older than me. They always give advice that encourages progress in my life. They always teach you what to do and what not to do. Apart from friends, family is certainly an important factor in why I have been able to grow and progress this far. For me, family is a place where I can feel truly home. My parents and siblings always support every decision I take. They also gave me advice so that the steps I took were 100% complete without the slightest hesitation. They gave advice for me to consider something that I would do to have a good impact on me and the people around me. My family taught me that life is not just living life but how we position ourselves in life and how we face and respond to every problem in life. Because life is a linear place where our feelings will shape our personality. Life will tell stories and dance with us when we are able to understand every situation we face. I think my luck is not only from the environment, but also from friends and even family. My family really has an important role in my progress.
As a person who likes to continue to grow and progress, there are times when you feel dissatisfied with yourself and even insecure. I felt this when I was in college, specifically when I was on a student exchange in Bali. I feel happy because I passed the student exchange program. I can learn while traveling. Every week this program sets a course that focuses on introducing Balinese culture. I met many people, including immigrants from abroad. I saw my lecturers and friends talking to tourists using English. They look really cool. But behind it all I felt inadequate and not worthy enough or what I could call insecure. I feel like it's not enough if I can only master my mother tongue. I felt insecure seeing my friends and lecturers able to speak English fluently. I felt stuck and left behind with other people.
People who like to progress and are never satisfied like me definitely don't give up when there are difficulties. I tried looking for an English learning application and found fondi. I focus on studying and spend 3 hours a day at the fondi. I often talk with people from my country who have the same goals of growth and development. I also have several friends from abroad. Of course, when I talk to them, I intend to train and get used to my hearing in an English accent. I often play at the Plaza and at events. The Plaza is the best place to practice active skills such as speaking English because there we can talk to many foreigners from various countries. Every conversation I have, directly increases my insight and the vocabulary I acquire. Then, because I felt unsatisfied, I decided to play at the event, at the event I could express my wishes according to the theme presented by the Talent. I met and talked a lot with people in various countries. Gradually I felt bored of being a member and finally I found out and decided to become a Talent. And until now I quite often become a Talent at events with the themes I want. I even took part in the Career Path Program. I want to train my leadership skills at events. Incidentally, at this event, certificates were given to users who took part in the program, especially leadership certificates at the event. Where fondi users are challenged to create their own events and bring topics according to the desired theme. Not only leadership skills, communication skills are also tested and trained. Talent will definitely be faced with a situation where they have to control the discussion so that it continues and doesn't get boring so that users join in the discussion and feel its impact.
I really feel comfortable using fondi. The real time "audio/voice chat" feature means we can face to face online and talk directly with people from abroad. With this we will be directly involved and understand our weak points when speaking English. By making us the actors in speaking, our active abilities will directly trigger our passive English skills. So that the impact is felt and development is balanced. Apart from that, there are also insights that we gain, so that through the conversations we have, we bring some knowledge that we can apply in the real world.
After 1 year of studying as a silent learner through fondi, my understanding and vocabulary have improved and developed. You could say, I used to speak English while still thinking about vocabulary or stuttering and now I feel like I'm flowing like water. I find it easier to express the contents of my thoughts to my Target Language, so that the Source Language and Target Language understand each other and understand what is being said. Of course, I also apply methods such as practicing, repeating and increasing vocabulary. From this method I felt a significant difference in my speaking ability.
From the progress I have made, I feel it has high value and is worth showing. I want to challenge myself, one of which is making an English Curriculum Vitae to apply for an internship in semester 7. I want to test how far I have progressed during one year, so that I know my ability to speak face to face to people, because so far I have fondi only voice chat online, not real.
