Fabio on life as a Senior Software Engineer at Ocado Technology

Fabio, what does a day look like for you as a Senior Software Engineer?

My day-to-day is exciting and varied. It might include researching new features, reviewing code, improving our internal tools, mentoring colleagues, providing client support or participating in new ecommerce platform initiatives.

What key tools and tech stack do you work with?

I work with Java and Spring Boot to develop and maintain REST microservices. I use AWS services for maintenance and administration and PostgreSQL and DynamoDB as internal databases. For monitoring and diagnosis, I use New Relic and Kibana.

Tell us some exciting challenges you tackle on a daily basis.

Currently, I'm the most senior engineer in my team and I get to mentor junior colleagues to ensure we share our domain knowledge across the team. I’m also working on platform-wide initiatives which means I get to collaborate with an international team of smart people to create exciting solutions.

What do you love the most about working here?

I love having the freedom to dedicate some time to activities beyond the specific domain of my team. There are many interesting broad initiatives, and I have always been encouraged to participate in them, allowing me to expand my knowledge.

What are some misconceptions people have about your role?

Some people might think that working as a software engineer is repetitive and solitary. At Ocado Technology, that is definitely not the case! The culture is extremely collaborative and I get to work with a brilliant team to tackle new challenges every day.

What makes your role here unique?

Being able to see the impact of my work is what makes this role really special. The intelligent software systems we build mean shoppers all over the world benefit from a frictionless experience and get time back to spend doing what they love. Finishing every week knowing that we are delivering meaningful innovation is incredibly motivating.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I owned a Vespa Piaggio for many years and loved learning how to disassemble and reassemble it in my garage. Maybe in another life I would be an automotive engineer!
