No, it's not that F word. I'm talking about the word "failure," which, in my view, is a very acceptable and even a needed word to have and acknowledge. I've recently had an interesting conversation where the person I was talking to had a weird reaction when I used the word failure to express some of my previous experiences. His first response was to advise me to completely delete that word from my vocabulary while emphasizing that we don't fail; we instead make mistakes. He explained that saying I had a failed experience paints a darker picture of everything in our lives. While I respect the other's opinion and have heard it several times, I understand that it's coming from an attempt to have a more positive mindset, but it's not realistic. I see it more as a form of denial.
The Oxford dictionary defines the word Fail: as "not to succeed." - to not be successful in achieving something.?
To me, that is a simple and accurate description. A word that is not to be feared but instead be embraced. It is the fuel of success. No one is perfect, and we don't know everything. Failure is inevitable. It is a must even for our development, growth, and improvement.
Mistakes lead to failure. One is the action, and the other is the result. They are two linked yet separate things and words.?And you have the power and control to convert that "failure" into a learning experience, growth, and development, but that is a choice you have to make; it is not a given outcome.
We shouldn't be afraid to fail because if we do, then we won't try, we won't push ourselves further, and we will get paralyzed by that fear. But if you accept it, you take away that negative and false power that the word has, and only then can you apply the positivity and see the learning and value from that experience.
I say fail, and fail hard so you can grow stronger and better.
