US stocks gained Friday, with the S&P 500 on track to log its longest win streak since October 2017, as investors cheered a solid jobs report and upbeat comments on prospects for a US-China trade deal.
Stocks: Amazon shares rose 1% after founder Jeff Bezos and soon-to-be ex-wife MacKenzie reached a deal where she will get 4% of the company’s outstanding stock, worth about $36 billion, as part of their divorce settlement.
Economic Numbers: Recession fears faded somewhat after the March jobs report showed that the US economy added 196,000 new jobs, above consensus expectations of 175,000. The Labor Department's official measure of unemployment held steady at 3.8%.
International: The positive sentiment was also supported by Xinhua News Agency’s report that Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a letter to President Trump that substantial progress had been made in US-China talks over the past months and called for negotiations to be wrapped up as soon as possible.
The pound weakened after U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May asked the EU to delay Brexit to June 30.
Sectors: Leaders: Materials (+4%), Financials (+3.4%), Communications Services (+3.3%), and Consumer Discretionary (+3.2%).
Laggards: Defensive stocks such as Consumer Staples (-1.0%) and Utilities (-0.2%) were the worst performing sectors this week.
