The “Eyes” Have It: My Thoughts on Updating Your Headshot

I just recently updated my headshot for a new role. It occurred to me that many people choose not to update their headshots and will keep the same one for years. There could be a myriad of explanations, from simple logistics to the more complicated psychological pressures that are forced on us regarding current beauty standards and aging gracefully. I’m only human, and I have those same concerns. I can see myself changing with each new photo. I can see that my body is different, and sometimes I am uncomfortable with taking photos.
When I had my most recent photo shoot, something struck me and changed my perspective. It caused me to realize why, in my opinion, updated headshots are critical to your professional and career growth.
My photographer for the shoot, Rainah Ramsey , is a dear friend and former coworker. She has amazing photography skills, but the real win was her patience and how she coxed me to bring out the wisdom and maturity hiding behind the shy awkwardness.
When she showed me the photos, I looked into my own eyes. I know it sounds crazy, but go on this journey with me (we’ll be back before lunch, I promise).

For the first time, I compared previous headshots to the current, and I was blown away by the wisdom I saw shining back at me through my eyes. They say eyes are the windows to the soul. This is true, and eyes also bring a level of intellectual transparency. I saw a woman who has overcome many odds and became wiser with each win. I saw patience and empathy in those eyes developed over years of servant leadership. I saw a twinge of humor sparkling in those eyes and the sadness that only experiencing significant personal loss can emote.
People will always be self-critical and make comparisons based on the latest acceptable health and beauty standards.
I say, embrace who you are and update those headshots. I am proud of how much I have grown as a person. I can see it clearly in my eyes. I want others to see it and share in my quest for wisdom.
So, for those who have not updated your profile pics and headshots, it’s time. I, for one, can’t wait to see the wisdom you’ve gained. And keep updating…because we never stop growing and learning.

6 个月These did come out nice. Well done. I'll also say I see more than wisdom in that look; I see "I'm done messing around, let's get this done," in there, too. :-)
