The origins of biometrics: from fingers to body

The science of biometrics has come a long way since its origins. The first recognised use of biometrics can be traced back to a burglary case heard at the Central Criminal Court, London in 1902 in which Henry Jackson was convicted of burglary. He had broken into a house and stolen billiard balls but he had left his thumb print on the windowsill.

Much to the dismay of some London magistrates, fingerprinting changed how law enforcement approached identity verification with over 400,000 fingerprint sets now held on UK law enforcement databases. Fingerprinting became a reliable tool to differentiate one individual from another and remains one of the cornerstones of biometrics to this day.

Yet, as technology advanced, so did our understanding of the human body as a unique identifier.
