Eyeonic's Online Visual Field Test in Ethiopia: Transforming Glaucoma Care and Real-world Case Studies

We partner with Oromia Health Bureau in Ethiopia to work together on our ground-breaking Online Visual Field Test, which enables perimetry to be performed on any computer or tablet, eliminating the requirement of expensive, bulky testing machinery.

Oromia?is the largest and the most populous region in Ethiopia. And Oromia?Regional Health Bureau is one of the major sector bureaus in the region responsible for providing a comprehensive package of preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative health services to the community at large through decentralized and democratized health system in collaboration with all stakeholders.

In late 2023, Oromia?Health?signed a memorandum of understanding with Eyeonic, to work together to deliver the Online Visual Field application?to improve the availability of diagnosis?and management for Glaucoma.

Following which, in late March 2024, we delivered a comprehensive training to the?Oromia?team. The training content consisted of a background to the test, data sets comparing the Eyeonic application to conventional technologies, test diagnosis and a view of the training and support tools.

A team of 9 clinicians?is now registered, enabled, and using the Eyeonic Online Visual Field application?in Oromia?hospitals with a view to roll it into to the remote?clinics after they have been using the Test in the regional hospital?system.

Over the past 3 months, we are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside our dedicated partners in Ethiopia and witness firsthand the impact of our technology. These results fuel our mission to bring accessible, high-quality eye care to everyone, everywhere.

The below case studies of VF results are screenshots of the results taken from the computers on which testing has occurred by the team of clinicians in Ethiopia using the Eyeonic system.

Case Study # 1:

Patient is a 52-year-old male.

The Eyeonic Online VF Results:

The Eyeonic Online VF results have high agreement with the IOP and VCD results and supports the diagnosis.

Case Study # 2:

Patient is a 46-year-old female.

The Eyeonic Online VF Results:

As the central 4 points are affected in the 24 degree field, it is therefore necessary to perform a central 10-2 test, which gives better assessment of the central 10 degree field for localised defects. Results shown below:

The Eyeonic Online VF test has strong correlation between 24-2 and central 10-2 test modes.

The Eyeonic Online VF test also demonstrate a strong correlation with the OCT test.

Case Study # 3:

Patient is a 59-year-old male.

Eyeonic Online VF Results:

Similar to Case #2 above, due to the central points defects, the clinician conducted a central 10-2 test on the patient’s left eye to further assess the defects of the central 10-degree field in addition to the results of the wider 24-degree field. Results shown below:

The Eyeonic Online VF test has good repeatability, and strong agreement between the 24-2 and central 10-2 tests.

Case Study # 4:

Patient is a 67-year-old male with normal vision, normal IOP and optic discs.

Eyeonic Online VF Results:

From the above 4 case studies, it demonstrates that the Eyeonic Online VF test is accurate, both in 24-2 and central 10-2 modes, and repeatable.
