Extraterrestrials Would Be Horrified by Earth’s Ethics

Dear Mindful Leader,

Have you ever looked up at the stars and wondered, Are we alone?

The Bible doesn’t explicitly tell us that Earth is the only cradle of life in this vast cosmos. In fact, when we consider the boundless creativity of God, it’s almost naive to assume we are His only creation. But here’s the kicker: if extraterrestrial life were to observe us from afar—or even up close—what would they think of our ethical landscape?

I dare say, they might think we’re utterly lost, scrambling in a maze of our own making, blinded by the very systems we’ve created.

Imagine this: a civilization capable of traversing the stars, with technologies and ethics refined over eons, gazes upon Earth.

What do they see?

They see a planet enveloped by a halo of space junk—a literal junkyard in orbit, a testament to humanity’s careless stewardship of the heavens. They see nations, once bastions of democracy, mirroring the horrors of Rwanda during the genocide, where political strife breeds hate, division, and a spiral of moral decay that knows no bounds.

Yes, we are careening toward ethical oblivion, and if aliens were to judge us, here’s a glimpse of the bizarre ethical dilemmas they’d find:

1. Political Corruption: Our leaders are often more concerned with power than with truth, compassion, or justice. The truth is twisted, and morality is up for sale. Just as Rwanda was torn apart by ethnic hatred, today’s political systems are rife with division, where truth is sacrificed for the sake of winning. The polarization in countries like the United States has escalated to the point where neighbors become enemies, and the very fabric of society is being ripped apart.
2. Environmental Neglect: We have poisoned our own waters, polluted our air, and reduced our planet’s biodiversity to a fraction of its former glory, all in the name of progress. Take, for example, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—an island of plastic waste twice the size of Texas. It’s a stark symbol of our disregard for the planet, where short-term gains are prioritized over long-term sustainability, leading to a world that is literally choking on its own waste.
3. Economic Disparity: The rich are getting richer, the poor poorer, and the gap between them widens by the second, an economic chasm that spits in the face of the Biblical call to love thy neighbor. Consider the fact that just 26 individuals hold as much wealth as the poorest 3.8 billion people combined.
4. Technological Misuse: We’ve created powerful technologies, but instead of using them to uplift humanity, we’ve turned them into tools of surveillance, oppression, and destruction. The use of drones for targeted killings, the exploitation of personal data by tech giants, and the creation of deepfakes to manipulate reality—these are just a few examples of how technology, in the wrong hands, becomes a weapon rather than a blessing, distorting our ethics and eroding trust.
5. Moral Relativism: Our society is awash in the notion that there is no absolute truth, no fixed morality—just a buffet of ethical choices where each person picks what suits them best. This has led to a world where actions once universally condemned are now justified in the name of personal freedom. For instance, the normalization of hate speech under the guise of free expression has eroded the very concept of shared values, leaving us in a moral freefall where anything goes, and nothing is sacred.
6. Social Media Manipulation: We’ve allowed our minds and morals to be hijacked by algorithms designed to feed us what we want to hear, rather than what we need to know, sowing discord and division. The Cambridge Analytica scandal, where millions of Facebook users’ data was harvested to manipulate elections, is a glaring example. Social media platforms have become echo chambers that amplify our biases, fuel conspiracy theories, and deepen societal divides, making meaningful dialogue nearly impossible.
7. Dehumanization: Whether it’s through war, systemic racism, or the marginalization of the vulnerable, we have a frightening capacity to strip others of their humanity, all while claiming moral superiority. The treatment of migrants at borders, where families are torn apart, and children are caged, or the systemic discrimination against racial minorities that persists in various forms around the world, are stark reminders of how easily we dehumanize others. These actions are justified by twisted moral rationales, yet they stand as a testament to our collective ethical failure.

If an alien civilization were to judge us by these standards, what would they think?

Perhaps they’d see us as lost children, stumbling in the dark, our ethics distorted beyond recognition. They might wonder how a species so gifted with intelligence could so profoundly misunderstand the very principles that should guide our existence.

God’s creation is vast, and the Bible tells us that the heavens declare His glory (Psalm 19:1).

But what do our actions declare?

If aliens are out there watching, they might just be shaking their heads, wondering why a species blessed with so much potential has chosen to mire itself in such profound ethical confusion.

The question is: Are we ready to face these truths and begin the work of aligning our ethics with the higher calling we’ve been given?

The universe is watching.
