Looking to tack on an extra day or two to your PestWorld2022 itinerary?
October is a WONDERFUL time to visit New England and soak in some of the miraculous fall colors. NEPMA recommends a visit up north to Maine to see Portland, Kennebunk, or Acadia National Park, and another great leaf-peeping opportunity can be found in New Hampshire at the White Mountains. ?
Looking for something closer to Boston, instead? Make a quick trip south to visit Plymouth or Cape Cod. While it may be too cold to take a dip in the ocean at the beaches of the Cape Cod National Seashore that time of year, there is still plenty to do and view. Another fun place to visit down south is in Rhode Island at the Newport Mansions.
Whatever your interests, indoor or outdoor, there is plenty to do and see just a short drive away. Continue on for the details!
Portland, Maine:
They call Maine "Vacationland." Portland is located in Southern Maine on Casco Bay. Portland is known for its beautiful lighthouses, maritime history, and coastal forts. There are beaches and a ferry service for visitors who want to explore the Bay, including several of its bigger islands. There is plenty to do and much to see in Portland. Check out Old Port, which consists of fishing wharves, converted warehouses and countless shops and restaurants. The West End is another popular area, riddled with Victorian-Era homes, including the Victorian Mansion Museum. Don’t forget to stop by the Western Promenade, where you’ll see fantastic river and mountain views.
There are multiple ways to get from PestWorld to Portland, Maine. For those that do not plan to rent a car, it’s about a 15-minute walk (0.8 miles) from the Convention Center to South Station. From there, you can catch a Concord Coach bus and in a short couple of hours, you will arrive in Portland. You can also take the Amtrak train from North Station to Portland and arrive in a few hours. The Downeaster train offers four round trips every day from North Station to Portland to Brunswick, Maine. See links below for more information:
Kennebunk, Maine:
Kennebunk is a town in York County, Maine that straddles the Kennebunk River. This charming village is a popular destination for antique aficionados and beach enthusiasts. ?You can start your visit with a narrated sightseeing tour by Intown Trolley. Enjoy salty sea breezes while biting into an infamous lobster roll at the Clam Shack. Take a stroll along Parsons Way, a scenic seaside path that passes Saint Ann’s historic stone church en route to Walker’s Point and the Bush family summer compound.
Acadia National Park:
Acadia National Park protects the natural beauty of the highest rocky headlands along the U.S. Atlantic coastline. Visitors can explore up to 27 miles of historic motor roads and hike up to 158 miles on trails or 45 miles on carriage roads. Before dawn, people make their way to?Acadia?National Park's highest point, eager to claim being the?first?to?watch?the?sunrise?on Cadillac Mountain.
The two most popular sunrise routes are the?Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail and the Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail. The Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail is the shorter of the two and is one of the most popular hikes in Acadia National Park. You can also drive to the top of Cadillac for those that may want an extra couple of hours of shut-eye. A recommendation for the more experienced hikers would be to tackle the Beehive Loop, which offers unbelievable views. Not an avid hiker? That’s okay, too! May we suggest the Jordan Pond Path for an easier stroll, which is a mostly-level 3.5-mile loop that takes you around the Jordan Pond shore. There is a trail suitable for everyone at Acadia. Don’t forget to do your research before embarking.

Plymouth to Cape Cod, MA:
As you can imagine, Plymouth rock is the most visited rock in the country. According to legend, Plymouth Rock is the boulder upon which the Pilgrims landed when they arrived from England in 1620. Travel a bit further South on Route 3 to make your way to Cape Cod. The beauty of traveling to the Cape in October is that you avoid the crowds and many times, the need to purchase a beach pass. The best way to get from Boston to Newport without a car is?to train and bus, which takes just over 2.5 hours. The most common way is to catch an Amtrak train out of Boston, which is offered 6 times a day.
