Extend my Support on Windows & SQL 2008!
With Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 on the brink of end of support on the 1-14-2020 and 7-9-2019 respectively, technical support and security will be discontinued by Microsoft. The publisher has launched new Extended Support SKUs to replace Premium Assurance. Premium Assurance proved to be far too complicated to execute with price increases depending on the time period it was purchased. Coupling this with an all or nothing approach to covering your entire footprint, it was quickly dismissed by businesses as a viable option. With the new Extended Support model, it is being sold in one year increments only under Enterprise Agreements thus far. It also requires the Server license to have Active Software Assurance to add the Extended Support option but there is no standardization requirement. The program mirrors the licensing models of the products it supporting but is currently only a one year SKU that does not coterm based on use. It is expected that the following years support options will exponentially increase in price if it is offered but nothing has been released to date. Microsoft continues to offer Free Extended Support on out of support instances if you migrate them to Microsoft’s Azure Cloud. Refactoring an application for the cloud can be difficult and sometimes it just does not meet the ROI vs just leaving the system unsupported. As Microsoft’s US Partner of the year for Apps and Infrastructure, Insight can offer a handful of services from Assessments to Migrations to assist organizations weight the risks and migrate toward the best direction for them.
