Express logistics inspirational guest lecture Trevor Hoyle former SVP Fedex to next generation at University of West London.

Express logistics inspirational keynote was given by Trevor Hoyle former SVP Fedex to next generation Express Delivery Managers, at University of West London

Dr Tracey Worth with Trevor Hoyle former SVP Fedex and Inst of Couriers Chair, Carl Lomas for an inspirational guest lecture to our next generation of sector.

Trevor Hoyle gave an inspirational keynote lecture to University West London express manager apprentices this week, it was a motivational vision of express logistics at the very top end of management, a vision for our sector.

‘Get people to relate to you.’

‘Speak truth to power’

‘Have a plan, be focused, trust in your beliefs.’

Trevor was the July guest lecturer for Express Manger Degree Apprentices UWL. The lecture was a frank and personal inspiring motivation in leadership. Trevor focused on special moments in a career, reviewing a journey. Born 1961 and schooled in Kent, he expected to enter motor engineering via car racing however, changing his mind reality was joining Fedex with four thirty am starts! and twenty couriers out of Enfield depot. Trevor spoke of his moral compass in his copper box 'I had a service guide and a quality driven management guide in paper, these were my foundation stones of my compass.' I joined the Saturday Fedex course, ‘Is management for me?’ and it was.

Core part of Trevors insight was 'Be sure to have your own moral compass in your management career. You are in a role like the conductor of an orchestra and it's your mission to get the tune correct.'

With retirement (2023) Trevor left with over twenty thousand members of the team under his responsibility. ‘Get people to relate to you. Speak truth to power.’ ‘It's important to be reflective.’ ‘Surround yourself by critical friends’ ‘Functional matrix structures benefit strategy but do slow down progress speed.’ ‘Make the structure fit but be prepared to change it if needed to align the business plan.’

Trevor went on to explain; 'My career after Fedex did not stop, retirement was?a step, I took up running to complete the big six world marathons. We all set our own barriers in life.

I read my first leadership book back in the eighties, it continues, but you have to find your own style as a leader, your beliefs and values are what shape you. There is a World of change today as leadership styles have evolved and adapted.

If you are going to be a leader, people will only follow you if they trust you. You must share something of your self, build a relationship t be leader others can relate to. To see what is going on you must engage at the coal face, be authentic, display empathy with team members.'

The stand out motivation for any leader is ‘A goal without a plan is just a dream’ but ‘Change + Attitude = Opportunity’ 'You set your limits.'

The power of leadership was shared through the eminent career of a express delivery leader which led to the questions of what are the challenges today?

Trevors thoughts on this; 'Sustainability is the massive challenge today, AI and robotics will change our sector, talent at the front line is a huge future challenge.

Asking what book was he reading today he responded 'The book I am reading today?there are so many, [I] just constantly read,’ take one key thing from every book you read.’ Read about AI and sustainability today, check out scope 1 2 & 3.

The EXDM students gave a huge vote of thanks for the time and knowledge shared. Thank you Trevor and thank you FedEx.
