1. Circulation of films on streaming services and films’ success on Netflix

The data analysis includes total times viewed, average views per title and the total number of films commissioned by Netflix for 13 markets: the seven small CresCine markets and the European Big Five and Poland based on the first Netflix Engagement Report (January-June 2023) and other data sources.

Netflix commissioned the highest number of films in the UK (31), Spain (30), and Italy (23). Among the smaller CresCine markets, Flanders in Belgium saw the highest number of Netflix-commissioned films (5).?UK films led in total views, while Italian films received the fewest views from the six large markets.

Within the small markets, films from Denmark saw the highest total views and average views per title. The streamer did not commission any films from Croatia, Estonia, and Lithuania in the period of analysis. 2. Circulation to key export territories and the role of partnerships networks in film export

A closer look into how export dynamics and partnership networks vary across the 13 markets shows that collaborations with European partners dominated export admissions for films from Germany, Italy, Poland, Estonia, Croatia, and Lithuania.

Others collaborated extensively with US partners (UK and Portugal). Ireland and Flanders top admissions came from a cluster involving a diverse international mix of partners.

Delving into specific export markets and partnership networks, it becomes apparent that Spanish films achieve their highest admissions in Europe with European collaborators and in the US with North American partners, highlighting the significance of a strategic approach to partnerships for international distribution.


3. Large markets' outlook on competitiveness and effects of US films in Europe

The European ‘Big Five’ assesses international circulation and focuses on strategic points such as increasing co-productions and identifying emerging export markets.

Such a strategic concern is less evident in small markets. In the report, you can explore six profiles of the large markets:? France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland and the UK - while also examining the competitiveness outlook in these large markets.?

In the report, you can also understand what are the most popular genres of US films in the 13 markets we cover. According to our analysis of the effects of US films in the 13 European markets, the majority of US films are based on pre-existing IP. According to our analysis, among the top 100 US films by admissions in both the CresCine markets and the larger markets from 2014 to 2022, 13 were standalone films, while 87 were based on existing IP, most of which are sequels (55).?


4. Most exported genres and the largest producers of animation films

The data insights on genres show that fiction films exported from the six large markets, drama and comedy are the most popular genres.

The output of animation films in the period 2014-2022 was highest in France (77 titles) followed by Germany (45) and the UK (37). France and Italy stand out for having a strongly drama-oriented repertoire of films (34% of genre tags). Both countries also have a strong orientation towards comedy, with the genre representing approximately 29% and 28% of their genre tags.?
