Exploring the Wonders of Atacama: A FAM Trip Adventure with Marilda Villatoro

In early August 2024, Marilda Villatoro , our dedicated Project Manager from Chile, embarked on an extraordinary Familiarization (FAM) Trip to San Pedro de Atacama. This journey highlighted the unique charm and unparalleled experiences that Atacama, one of the driest places on earth, has to offer.

Arrival and Introduction

Marilda's adventure began with a flight from Santiago to Calama, the closest airport to San Pedro de Atacama. A scenic 101 km drive later, she arrived at her destination, nestled 2,450 meters above sea level in the heart of the Atacama Desert.

The town, home to around 11,000 residents, boasts a rich cultural tapestry with a significant number of foreign workers enhancing the local tourism scene.

Day 1: Immersive Cultural Experiences

The trip kicked off with a warm welcome from Sebastián and Diego, co-founders of Turismo Gato Andino .

Marilda and her group were introduced to the local culture with a training session on the Andean Mountain Cat conservation efforts.

The afternoon was spent exploring the Valle de la Luna and Valle de la Muerte, where stunning landscapes and vibrant sunsets provided breathtaking backdrops.

The evening concluded with a stargazing session under the clear, unpolluted skies of Atacama—an experience recently featured by National Geographic.

Day 2: Authentic Andean Encounters

Day two offered a deep dive into Andean traditions. Marilda visited the Ayllu de Solor, where she engaged in activities such as llama trekking, seed collection, and clay crafting. The visit to Casa Luna showcased exclusive accommodations just minutes from the village center, featuring an outdoor pool and luxurious amenities.

A gastronomic highlight was the lunch at Restaurant UNAI, a recent addition to San Pedro’s dining scene, known for its impeccable service and innovative cuisine. Later, Marilda explored the wine route in Toconao, tasting unique, citrusy wines.

The day wrapped up with an astronomical experience at one of the region's premier observatories, offering detailed insights into celestial phenomena and the opportunity to view the stars through one of the largest telescopes available.

Day 3: Majestic Landscapes and Cultural Immersion

The final day took Marilda to the high-altitude Lagunas Altiplánicas and Piedras Rojas in Salar de Aguas Calientes. The journey included a stop in Socaire, renowned for its traditional gastronomy and agricultural practices.

After a scenic hike to the Miscanti and Mi?iques lagoons, Marilda enjoyed lunch before visiting the Reserva Elemental Puribeter. This reserve is a hub for conservation and can host up to 100 guests for events.

The trip concluded with a farewell dinner at Restaurant Adobe, featuring a delightful menu and a celebration of the region's culinary offerings.

San Pedro de Atacama offers a range of accommodation options, from luxury properties like Explora and Awasi to comfortable options like Diego de Almagro and Kimal.

For those seeking a more intimate stay, hotels such as La Casa de Don Tomás and El Refugio by Don Tomás provide a cozy and well-appointed experience.
