Exploring a wealth of alternative data with ISI Markets

Investment strategists and portfolio managers are on the hunt for timely, detailed insights that go beyond traditional sources. Get an edge on the economy by leveraging the powerful integration of “macro-to-micro” insights from EPFR and CEIC Data (both ISI Markets companies).

Download our chart pack to learn more about how ISI Markets' difficult-to-source data helps our clients connect economic factors, investor sentiment, and asset class performance, for unparalleled intelligence into money movements across regions and asset classes.

We’ve produced over 30 visualizations combining EPFR’s leading fund-flow data with alternative datasets from CEIC – the winner of WatersTechnology.com 's 2024 award for the Best Alternative Data Provider to the Buyside.

We use proxy indicators like card-payment data, shipping traffic and road haulage tolls to project retail sales and trade figures – and fill in the gaps for countries’ official economic statistics. Asset-allocation decisions can be linked to currency movements using EPFR's exclusive fund-flow data. And as climate change disrupts agriculture, we show how extreme rain and heat can predict commodity prices.

The US job market: An early take on official data from recruitment ads

JOLTS - the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey – is a US report that takes a deep dive into employment. It examines the ratio of advertised positions to joblessness, for instance, or whether Americans are confident enough to quit their jobs to take on new roles. But it's released only monthly, with a significant time lag versus real-time data.

To get an early take on the next JOLTS – and the implications for Federal Reserve policy – CEIC users can tap high-frequency, alternative data thanks to our partnership with Revelio Labs.

Malaysia: Fund flows can predict currency movements

Exclusive fund-flow data from EPFR (like CEIC, an ISI Markets company) lets us track inflows into local bond and equity funds for nations like Malaysia – whose ringgit was a top performer in foreign-exchange markets in mid-2024.

Malaysian bond and equity funds saw positive inflows through much of last year, preceding the currency strength. Those inflows turned to outflows after Donald Trump's victory in the US election; again, the ringgit's movements followed suit.
