Exploring Servant Leadership # 1

Servant leadership is first a mindset which gives birth to a heart condition. It begins by placing others before self. From a human nature standpoint it is definitely not intuitive. Is it really possible to change from a perspective of selfish to selfless? Is there a return on investment so great that putting others before myself is worth it? Though it is only one man's opinion I believe it is worth it. When I have applied this principle in my career, my marriage, raising my kids, friendships, and just in daily life I have seen unbelievable results.
Though applying this principle has benefitted my careers as a USAF member, a fire fighter/EMT, helicopter rescue pilot, hazardous material technician, fugitive recovery agent, homeland security manager, antiterrorism officer, bla bla bla; what is most exciting is what took place on the inside. The times that I placed value on relationships and put others needs first, were the only times I felt true purpose and fulfillment as a man. Don't get me wrong, I am definitely a work in progress when it comes to this principle. (Just ask my wife..Lol) No matter what I accomplished in my life to show the world I was worthy to be called a man, it never compared to what I felt like when I invested deeply in others.
I plan to explore this concept fully and hope to hear from others who have experienced some of the same things. Serving others and investing in core relationships exercises the heart and soul of a man. It is what is on the inside of a man that defines him. Yes, these are deep waters and rarely do men venture there willingly. I'll be the first one to say it is uncomfortable; But when the return on investment is joy, peace, fulfillment, and purpose in my life, I'm willing to take that chance.
How about you?
