Exploring the Secret World of Your Dreams

Exploring the Secret World of Your Dreams

We all dream. Everybody dreams because dreaming is a natural experience that occurs for all of us during our nightly sleep phase and it’s a truly fascinating area to explore. But the important question is:

Do you remember your dreams?

Do you ever take a moment when you wake up to consider the significance of your dream experiences? Have you any idea what you might be missing?

Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.

-??????Harriet Tubman

Dreams provide an extraordinary insight into all aspects of our lives. Yet, it’s freely-accessible a resource that’s all too often neglected. And why are our dreams potentially so important? Because of the impact and influence of the unconscious mind.

It’s been estimated that some ninety-five percent of our behaviours - our thoughts, feelings and actions - are a product of our subconscious. That’s a truly astonishing figure to consider. Ninety-five percent. Yet, the subconscious framework that underlies our drives and emotional energy is largely hidden from sight and it remains particularly elusive to our conscious minds. And that’s largely because our subconscious and our conscious minds do not share a common language.

All men dream: but not all men dream equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake up in the day to find it was vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act out their dreams with open eyes in order to make them possible.

― T.E. Lawrence

And this is how we live our lives - in blissful unawareness of the unimaginably vast resource of the unconscious. Since the conscious mind can only deal with a very limited number of subjects at any one time, we easily overlook the fact the unconscious is absorbing incredibly large amounts of data – all the time. It’s a vast depository for everything that’s happening around us and it possesses the remarkable capability of analysing all the information and arriving at extremely well-informed conclusions. But, do we listen? Probably not. Do we pay attention? Very rarely. Do we make any effort to access this priceless source of data, analysis and insight? Strangely, we do not.

I dream. Sometimes I think that's the only right thing to do.

― Haruki Murakami

The language of the unconscious is expressed mostly in symbolism. And the imagery can acquire a very personal nature, depending on how you respond emotionally to the symbols and situations that unfold in your dreams. So, dreaming is in many instances a perfect avenue through which your largely-ignored subconscious can communicate with you. It’s a magnificent gateway into a fabulous world of deeper understanding. It provides advice, good counsel and clearly-defined suggestions that are based on the most complete understanding of who you are. The subconscious always seeks to act in your best interests, alerting you to possible consequences of ill-judged actions and striving to help you in all areas of your life. What a magnificent resource to engage on behalf of your hopes, goals and aspirations.

All that we see or seem to be is but a dream within a dream.

― Edgar Allan Poe

Learning to tune into your personal dream resources is an excellent skill to acquire. And it easily becomes a very comfortable and extremely helpful habit.

The process begins by telling yourself calmly and clearly that you are going to remember your dreams – and this is something you tell yourself just before you intend to fall asleep. Many people find it helpful to keep a notebook and pen by the bed in order to record the details of any dreams that stand out. Remember – the dreams are expressing themselves in symbols. They rarely offer a literal translation.

It’s great fun to think about the symbols and situations that occurred in your dreams and assess your emotional reaction to whatever transpired. As you explore the significance of the symbolism, you might be astonished to discover some incredibly profound insights into your life and circumstances. You might gain insights into all manner of situations. And you might discern patterns that tell you how to navigate a difficult situation or neutralise a difficult problem. You’re dealing with a truly vast and incredibly powerful resource. When you enlist its peerless support, you might be astonished at how much information will be made available to you.

Clearly, not all dreams acquire this kind of very useful significance. Sometimes, the dream sequence is more closely connected to how your mind is processing and filing the events of the day. But you’ll quickly learn to discriminate between the regular, mundane, data processing dreams and the ones that stand out with increasing clarity as a source of insight, inspiration and profound guidance.

Throw your dreams into space like a kite, and you do not know what it will bring back, a new life, a new friend, a new love, a new country.

― Anais Nin

As you learn to catch the first thread of your dreams as you awaken, you will soon be able to follow the links and connect to all the symbolism that your unconscious has presented to you during the night. This method has been the source of extraordinary creativity. It’s a return to a deeper way of appreciating our lives and how we fit into the world. We perceive the complex web of connections that link us to everyone and everything. And the entire process is illuminated by the flow of our dreams.

You might also enjoy experimenting with your newly-discovered connections. You could ask yourself a question about anything that’s been puzzling you and expect the subconscious to shed light on the subject. Some people take a sip from a glass of water before they fall asleep and create the clear expectation that they will recall the answer to their question when they wake up in the morning and finish the glass of water. It’s simple. It’s easy. And it works.

These new habits of recalling and understanding our dreams can open up a world of new experiences and understanding. If you want to discover the power of your own subconscious resources, make a point of remembering your dreams and prepare to be amazed by what shows up!

Dreams are the touchstones of our characters.

― Henry David Thoreau
