?? The S.C.O.P.A. Framework: How to Define the Scope of a Design Project. ??
One of the most celebrated takeaways from the Move 78 Workshop and Playbook is the S.C.O.P.A. Framework! Participants are thrilled by its innovative approach.?
While the terminology and format might seem new, S.C.O.P.A. is grounded in the same principles that underpin the Move 78 Playbook, drawing on the best available knowledge in service and design. Its foundation is rooted in the Design Science Research Methodology, as proposed back in 2007 by Peffers, Tuunanen, Rothenberger, and Chatterjee.?
Our main contribution was framing it as a SCOPE definition framework, hence the title: S.C.O.P.A.
?? What is the SCOPA Framework?
The SCOPA Framework stands for Stakeholder, Context, Objective, Problem, and Artifact. It's a comprehensive tool that guides service designers through a structured process to ensure all critical aspects of a service concept are considered. Here’s a brief overview:
- Stakeholder (S): Identifies all parties affected by or can affect the service, ensuring their needs and expectations are understood and addressed.
- Context (C): Examines the environment in which the service operates, including technological, social, and economic factors.
- Objective (O): Defines clear goals for what the service aims to achieve, guiding the design process and measuring success.
- Problem (P): Articulates the challenges that the service aims to solve, ensuring the design process is focused and effective.
- Artifact (A): Represents the tangible outputs of the design process, which could be digital interfaces, physical products, or strategic plans.
?? How Does It Relate to the Move 78 Playbook?
The Move 78 Playbook, inspired by a pivotal board game move, symbolizes a strategic and innovative approach to service design, particularly emphasizing the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The SCOPA Framework is one of the main components of this playbook, providing a structured methodology that complements the dynamic and creative strategies promoted by Move 78.
By integrating SCOPA, the Move 78 Playbook ensures that every service design project is:

Objectives are excellent to keep focused and stay coherent, and in a familiar setting and data rich environment it's easy to monitor progress once you've established objectives. I'm all for objectives in a controlled setting. But, when you're exploring the open water of new tech, new context, and new organizations focus can work against not just the necessity to discover, reframe, and redirect but sets you up to miss things along the way. Discovery and invention happens often when we wander off the path.
